GMBMFB Readers: do you buy organic foods?

Since October, I’ve been buying more and more organic food products. They’re obviously more expensive, so I’ve seen my weekly grocery costs balloon from about $25 to $40. Truthfully, I haven’t done much research into organic products, so I’m not exactly sure why I’ve been making the switch. I guess it has something to do with me trying to get into a healthier lifestyle, and trying to take care of my body. I’m mostly into the idea of not putting pesticides into my body, and I guess I would consider any other “benefit” from organic foods to be an added bonus. Truthfully, I’ve never really paid attention to my diet, except to calorie count (and not to eat pieces of chocolate that are bigger than my face) … so this whole “organic” thing has thrown me into a whole new ball game.

It started with my switching from regular milk to soy milk. I have a hard time digesting dairy to begin with, so this was a logical switch … from soy milk, I switched to organic salad greens and dressing … and now I find myself spending $5 on a small jug of juice. I also don’t eat a lot of meat (I very rarely eat red meat, sometimes chicken … but I do eat a lot of fish), so I like to buy tofu and tofu substitutes. BF buys all organic products. He gets a discount at the local store since he knows someone that works there, but his grocery bills are still pretty expensive. I don’t think that’s a bad thing though. He values his body and the food that he eats, so it seems logical to want to take care of himself with a good diet.

I don’t eat a lot of food to begin with, and it’s not like $40/week is a huge amount to spend, so I don’t feel too terrible spending that kind of money. But it’s just hard to make the switch. For the past year, I’ve been teaching myself to buy only what’s on sale, and nothing else. And that was just buying regular produce. It’s even harder now that I’m buying a lot of organic stuff. I really have to think about what I want to eat, and plan my meals in order to make it work. It’s okay when you’re buying for 2 people, because with your combined money, you can buy more things … but now that I’m just buying for myself, I have to stretch my money a lot farther.

Do you buy organic foods? If so, do you buy some products that are organic, or all organic? Why?

At this point….no, although I do try and witrh certain foods, liek apples and berries. I hope that one day I can afford to, but right no its not really realistic. However I do try to buy in season and local, this is a little more affordable. Tho I am a vegatarian (my first step in being more eco/animal friendly, this years resoultion was too buy more natural body products which are not tested on animals.
