Okay well this was an expensive week, BUT I finally booked my first trip of 2013. :) Nic and I are headed to sunny Las Vegas in May – it’s my graduation present to him, since he will have just finished his Masters at that point. It works out to $360.75 per person for our flight, luggage fees (unfortunately they charge $26 per person for carry-on luggage), and 5 nights accommodation. It was a pretty amazing deal if you ask me! I’m really excited to finally see the Grand Canyon, do a little hiking, and of course – enjoy the city! :)
Give Me Back My Five Bucks a quest for financial independence

that’s an awesome deal, where about are you flying from?
We will be flying out of Bellingham, which is only about 45 minutes from where I live. And we both have NEXUS passes, which will make crossing the border a lot less painful. :)
Start saving spending money NOW! I saved a ton of money, took an empty suitcase and came home with a full one from Vegas (and left over money). It was a great way to update my wardrobe. The breakfast buffet at Treasure Island is pretty good….I just looked and yikes it’s jumped in price. I went in 2009 and it was $13.95 and now it’s $17.95. Sigh.
This will be my 4th time to Vegas, and I’m anticipating having to save a lot of spending money. :) We want to rent a car and check out the Grand Canyon (and Red Rocks), plus I want to do the Stratosphere Sky Jump, shoot some guns, ride the roller coaster, and eat a lot of delicious food. I’ve never tried the Treasure Island breakfast buffet before, but I’ll definitely add it to the list of places to check out online. I love the Paris breakfast buffet though! :)
Las Vegas sounds awesome! Such a great graduation gift! I`m going to Spain in June, as a graduation gift to myself! Works that way too!
If you are going to do a buffet, shell out the little extra and do the Harrah’s Buffet of Buffets. Once price and 24 hour access to all the buffets on harrah’s properties (I like the Spice Market in Planet Hollywood, but Pairs is nice too!). It costs a little less than two seperate visits. If you time it well (we start at 1pm) you can get a lunch, dinner, breakfast and another lunch for around $50 or so.
Thanks for the recommendation! I didn’t even know that existed. Will definitely do some online research on it.
Are you gluten intolerant? Just wondering.. I’ve tried to improve my eating, I heard that gluten free food is easier for the body to digest efficiently..
And off topic, but seeing as it’s rrsp deadline tomorrow, wonderered how much you were able to contribute this mostly self employment year. I’m about to make my lump sum eeeeeeee… 10k eeeeeee…
never been to LV, just not into it.. but booked NYC for April long weekend. Enjoy your vacay.. nice to have something to look fwd to : )
I’m not gluten intolerant, but I have been having problems with gluten lately. Hoping that cutting back will make me feel a bit better. :)
Wow, $10k into your RRSPs?! That’s great, good for you! I was only able to contribute a few thousand dollars this year, but I knew that would be the case when I moved to Europe. Hoping to make that up this year with big contributions.
I love love love NYC… can’t wait to go back. Have fun!
I go to LV once a year for a few days and it’s a nice weekend getaway.
Nexus is awesome. It’s the best $50 spent.
I am subscribed to Groupon Las Vegas, I suggest to subscribe to it. There is sometime half decent deals.
Remember what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas! Lol.
The best buffet right now is at Caesars Palace. Also, Nobu just opened his new restaurant and hotel tower there too. You might want to check out downtown Las Vegas and do the zip line at the Fremont Street Experience. While you are downtown, check out the Golden Nugget’s Shark tank, Mob Museum, Smith Center, and Neon Museum. Pawn Stars is close by too. The Cosmopolitan is still the hot hotel of the moment, especially it’s Chandelier bar. Red Rock is only 45 minutes away but the Grand Canyon south rim is 4 hours. If you do the skywalk at the Grand Canyon make sure you bring extra money because its a big tourist trap, research that. If you have any other questions just email me since I was born and raised in Las Vegas :)
Oh yeah make sure you check out the new bridge at Hoover Dam!
Grand Canyon is amazing. For some reason we (stupidly) thought it was only a couple hours’ drive from Vegas but it was the better part of a day – 5 or 6 hours – but we took Route 66 which might have added a little time. Well worth it! I can only speak for the Bellagio buffet and it is fantastic!
Just thinking back, the drive was probably closer to 4-5 hours but they had been re-opening the Hoover Dam on our way through so we were stuck in traffic for eons. We also stopped to take lots of pictures along the way.
Vegas! So jealous. Definitely go check out the gun range, so fun. And for the budget conscious, so much free entertainment even if it’s just sitting at a bar on the street and watching the crazy bachelorette parties wander by.
