March 2012 Goals

March 2012 Goals:

  • Meet new people. I joined a Facebook group of English-speaking people living in Stuttgart. They meet for dinner every Tuesday evening, and I really want to go as soon as possible. Besides the occasional Skype conversations with friends and family, Nic is the only one I really talk to.
  • Write most of April’s blog posts & articles. I am traveling for 75% of April because I’m meeting up with a friend in Spain, my mom and sister are coming for a visit, and Nic and I are meeting up with a couple of his friends in Portugal. So I need to work hard and get most of my freelance writing done ahead of time.
  • Get my taxes organized for this year. I should have all of my paperwork mailed to me, so my taxes need to get done.
  • Have 10 No Spend Days. I have gotten into a really bad habit of just randomly buying food at street vendors just because I know that I can. It’s bad for my wallet, and for my waist line. So my goal is to make a better effort at packing a full day’s worth of food before I head out each morning. It’s not hard to make a sandwich and throw some fruit in my backpack.

Ongoing 2012 Goals:

  • Only post my own photos on GMBMFB.
  • Write one guest post for another blog or website.

Just curious- you’re paying a mortgage but have nothing budgeted for home insurance… Is someone else living in your home and paying for this? How does this work?

    Good luck with your goals.

The dinner thing sounds like it would be good! I’m also hoping to do a lot of my posts ahead of time.

  3. I assume you travel buy train.. how are the train tickets in Europe? Are they cheaper than the EuroPass (which is what I looked into when I thought about going to Europe a while back).

The train ticket prices are okay. I can see it being an awesome deal if you’re traveling a lot in a short period of time. However, we found that the Eurail passes aren’t a good option for us because our trips are over long weekends, and are spread far apart (only 1 or 2 trips per month). Plus, 50% of our travel will be by plane – since we just don’t have the time to be spending 10+ hours each way on a train.

We bought a 25% discount card for train travel in Germany, and that has helped us out a lot!

  4. Good luck with the goals… I totally know what you mean about randomly spending money on food, that’s what has brought my food spending up the last couple of months.

Sounds like you’re finding your balance of spending and saving! No spend days are a good goal to have.

Just some questions: why an English-speaking group? I mean, since you’re living in Germany for just a few months, I thought maybe meeting some German-speaking people would be more interesting. Many Germans speak great English too, so maybe you could consider joining a group where they may want to practice their English, but you benefit from maybe speaking some German with them, and getting a better feel of the country.

Meeting up with expats is a comfortable way to go, but…. it kind of defeats the point of living in another country. Especially since you’re already working 9 -10 hours a day in English.

Also, how come you only pay 1/3 rent? You seem on track to make around $2500 a month EASY, does your boyfriend really make that much more than you doing an internship? If so, maybe HE should do a guest post on how to score such a cushy internship in economically-hit Europe…. :)

I decided to join an English-speaking group because it seemed like a lot of fun. I think it will be nice being able to speak with people who understand what it’s like to live in the city and be from a different country. Plus, we are looking at taking German language courses in the evenings, and I’m sure these English speakers will also be able to help us with our German too. :)

As for the rent, I’m only paying 1/3 because I also have a full mortgage/maintenance fees/property tax to pay for back home (approx. $1400/month). And when we move back to Vancouver, Nic has an open invitation to live with me rent-free while he completes his masters program (1 semester left).

Does it pain you to have a mortgage that’s going to nothing since you are traveling like a starving student?
