Well, I guess it’s the holidays so I can’t complain that I haven’t gotten any freelance income. It’s all billed out, I just haven’t gotten paid yet. :) Hopefully the cheques come soon, so I can cash them in before I leave for Germany. I’ve been requesting direct deposit or PayPal payments from most of my advertisers, although some of them are insisting on mailing cheques. So I’ll have to figure that one out.

Other than that, it’s a normal week of spending. I spent a bit more on restaurants than normal, because I’m currently in my hometown for the holidays. :)

For Christmas, I asked for nothing, and I got spoiled. My sister bought me a blu-ray player (because I currently don’t even have a DVD player. I’m stoked, but also a little sad that I won’t be able to really use it until I get back in the fall. And my mom got me a Kindle! I’ve previously been against e-readers, but I think I might be coming around. I’ve already read the entire Hunger Games trilogy (in less than 36 hours), and am onto Water For Elephants. It’s just a little disappointing that ebooks are so pricey! And in some instances, I found that the paperback version on Amazon was less expensive than the Kindle version! What’s up with that!?

* This is all income I bring in that is above and beyond my full-time job. Money is primarily made through my two blogs and my graphic design business.

You may be against e-readers now, but they are a lifesaver when you’re traveling! English books are super expensive in Germany or anywhere in Europe and you can really only buy “bestsellers”. By having a Kindle, you can buy English books for FAR cheaper than you can there. I remember buying books for higher than even the Canadian price when I was in Europe. Say the book cost $10 CAD – it would have cost me about 12 euros. So you may think they’re pricey now, but maybe not when you compare them to the cost of the same books in Germany.

I’ve noticed that ebooks are more expensive also! So annoying.

Yeah, sometimes the eBooks are more than you’d pay, but I figure it’s just a small price to pay to not have a bunch of “stuff.” I am still waiting on my Kobo Touch I ordered, which should be here tomorrow. I’ve been able to sell a lot of my books online and then am buying eBooks with the money. It’s nice to slowly start seeing more visual space in my apartment!

I find that same thing all the time. I try to get free books on certain websites and convert them to a mobi so my kindle will read them. And if I can’t do that, I try to still get them from the library as often as I can. Very rarely will I let myself buy a full priced book.

My mother-in-law got me a Kindle, too! I dumped the entire ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series thus far on it, courtesy of my boyfriend.

Note, Krystal, that you can get a lot of books that have fallen into public domain (meaning that they now cost nothing because they’re out of copyright!) for the Kindle, like ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. Just search ‘public domain’ in Kindle books on the Amazon website and have a look!

Also, check out project gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org). That goes for EVERYONE here that has an e-reader. They’ll have a lot of the same public domain books in more formats.

    That’s my $0.02!

I didn’t think I’d like the books, but couldn’t stop reading them. They were quick and easy reads, and I wish they had lasted longer. :) I went and looked at the movie trailers… can’t wait to see everything come to life on screen. Even though I know they won’t nearly be as good as the books.

I’m with Serendipity. Most public libraries subscribe to e-book services now, so you can check out e-books from your library’s website. Our library’s service, Overdrive, is not compatible with Kindles in Canada yet, but may be in the future. It works with Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, and more!

When I was in Europe the one thing that I wish I had brought with me was an e-reader due to the fact that I couldn’t find any decent English books where I was living. I think you may find your Kindle to be a fantastic little tool and if you’re planning on bringing books it’ll give you a lot of extra room. If you do a search online you may find some free eBooks from your favourite authors (I found a really nice collection of scifi and fantasy at the Baen website http://www.baen.com/library.). Also, I found a really good program to help you manage your kindle called Calibre(http://calibre-ebook.com/) that allows you to load blog entries and news sources for free from websites. I hope that you enjoy it!

    Hi Krystal
I just wanted to say thanks for your post awhile back on e-series. Because of your post I recognized that the mutual funds I had with TD were not eseries as I had thought. I was able to convert them over by filling out the paperwork and it was not difficult thanks to your post. Again – Thanks.
