First, I went out for lunch on Monday to Cactus Club. This marks the second time all year that I’ve gone out for lunch during the work week. The first time was back in June, to celebrate a co-worker’s upcoming wedding. This time it was to celebrate 4 birthdays at work – mine included. So I couldn’t not go. I feel less bad about going out for lunch this time, because I already failed at the challenge. Still, I think only going out for lunch twice for the entire year so far is pretty good.
Second, I want to say that I will never, ever go back to Eccotique Salon in Metrotown again. Not that the guy who cut my hair was lousy (he was actually pretty good), but because, um, hello, the price!? I nearly dropped dead when it came to $82 ($72 + $10 tip), because the salon I go to back in downtown Victoria always ends up being less than $60 after a $10 tip.
I mean, it obviously serves me right for 1) not looking on the website for the prices, and 2) not inquiring about pricing when I booked the appointment. I guess I naively thought that the prices would be comparable because, come on, it’s a salon in a mall.
As for Seattle, I’m happy that I stayed under budget. I had budgeted around $300, and ended up spending $203.84. That doesn’t include tickets to the Ryan Adams show (I bought and paid for those months ago), or the hotel room (Nic paid for the 2 nights @ $89/night since I bought the tickets to both concerts). And that obviously doesn’t count the $228.42 I spent at Target. I bought an electric toothbrush for $129.99 (my dentist recommended it for my braces), extra toothbrush heads, and a bunch of other random personal care items that are a lot cheaper to buy in the USA than up here in Canada.
* This is all income I bring in that is above and beyond my full-time job. Money is primarily made through my two blogs and my graphic design business.
That was my week of spending! How was yours?

I hope you don’t mind I took a page out of your book with a weekly spend recap. I had made up a budget for October but I really had no idea if I was coming in over or under. The weekly spend recap is golden for seeing how I’m coming in and reminding me to stay on track!

I think that’s awesome that you’re doing weekly spending recaps too! :) They really help me to see where my money is going. I doubt most readers of this blog take the time to look at them anymore, but they’re still important to me.
I’m always so jealous of your side income. I wish I was as determined as you!

Sadly I don’t think $72 for a haircut is totally unreasonable. I went to a spa one time and it ended up being $120 without tip. I don’t think it was any better than any other haircut I have ever gotten. After that I got my mom to trim my hair for a year.

Yeah, part of me feels like it’s not unreasonable to expect to pay that much. It is Vancouver after all. But still. It’s a lot of money for something that wasn’t spectacular. I might make sure to schedule my next hair appointment in my hometown.
I find your weekly spending recaps very impressive. I would love to have a week of good spending, including a three day trip (not to mention paying for a plane ticket!) and still being up nearly $800. But there’s ots of time to work towards that :)

I always read your weekly spend recap, so please keep writing them. I think I should start doing it to see where that $20 goes every week.
I love that in New Zealand we don’t tip, so when I get my $45.00 haircut that is all that I pay.
Very interesting – how to servers at restaurants get by? I assume they aren’t paid less then minimum wage then.
FYI
When you run out of toothbrush heads for your electric brush, it’s cheaper to buy at Costco in States vs Target.
Costco sells in a pack of 8 for about $30-35 bucks.
It’s way cheaper then Target and in Canada for sure!
Ohhh thanks for the tip! I assume our Canadian Costco cards will work in the USA?
Yup, you can use your Canadian Costco card at Costco USA.
I am regular shopper at in the US. LOL
Not sure what brand of electric tooth brush you use.
But I use Oral B Triumph and I just checked my Costco receipt, I bought 8 pack replacement heads (floss action) for U$36.99 @ Costco Bellingham.
Tipping of any sort is very unusual in New Zealand. It is illegal to pay below minimun wage ($13.00 an hour) and therefore I have never heard of bar/wait staff being paid below it. The price of wages gets inlcuded in the price of meals/drinks you are charged. So when you go out to dinner you only pay for your meal and drinks.
[...] Care – Well, first I paid a dumb $82 to get my hair cut, and then we stopped in at Target on our way out of…. I bought an electric toothbrush, replacement heads, and stocked up on a bunch of personal care [...]
