Well, I scheduled a couple of posts to go up while I was at home on “vacation” over the long weekend, and none of them went up. So I don’t know if that was an error with WordPress, or with me. Either way, I should have checked in on the blog at least a few times.
Thanksgiving was good though. My boyfriend and I spent the long weekend back in Victoria. We had a nice dinner with my family, and time spent with my friends, as well as his friends (who were there to run the half-marathon). We even got to go to the Royal BC Museum (my favourite place as a kid), hiked Mt. Finlayson, went to Floyd’s Diner, and had a coffee date with Blonde on a Budget. :)

Thank you for this blog – I really enjoy it and get a lot of good practical information from it. I am curious how you are able to avoid lots of small purchases. Your weekly spending summaries are always so straightforward and disciplined. When I track my expenses, I find that I feel that my spending is cluttered with many so-called small expenses that add up eg: contribute $10 to group gift for colleague, $10 to 15 per week on misc beverages (I pack my lunch, and have morning coffee at home, but it is the drinks here or there during the week that add up), or street parking and the little splurges like a magazine here or there. I would love to hear more about how you can keep your spending so lean and mean and disciplined.
I’ve learned over the years to only spend money on what matters to me, and to cut the fat everywhere else. Magazines, parking, coffee and snacks during the day, etc. – they don’t add true value to my life, so I don’t bother buying them anymore. Instead, I choose to spend my money on things like the occasional dinner out with friends, travel, and electronics (sometimes). The little things add up fast, so I also very rarely carry cash on me. I find it’s a lot more hassle to pay for things with a card, so I usually just don’t.
That being said, if the little things are what make you happy, then keep spending on those things and cut out expenses in other areas of your life. It will take a while to figure out the right balance (it took me a couple of years after I got out of debt to figure myself out), but it’s worth it when you do! :)
I’m so jealous of your No Spend Days. I find the only way I can have a no spend day is if I am home all day (like yesterday). I find if I’m out and about I will usually stop and get a coffee somewhere. I’m asking for a Tassimo coffee maker for my birthday/Christmas so I can try and have more No Spend Days.

So true, ever since I came up with a (very strict) budget for myself, I think twice about every purchase. I keep very little cash on me and challenge myself to cut down my monthly credit card bill significantly. Now my purchases are few and far between and I look forward to and appreciate a nice meal out once in awhile way more than I did when I was eating out several times a week. Just a little discipline can go a long way!
P.S. I love Floyd’s Diner and miss Victoria dearly!

I’m just wondering if you plan the days that will be no spend days or do they just turn out that way?
Reason I ask is because, I’m thinking of trying to challenge myself to have at least 3 no spend days a week or so many a month and I’m just wondering how they happen for you.
No, they’re not planned at all, they just seem to happen. But I do try to have between 2-3 No Spend Days during the work week. I think it’s a great idea to challenge yourself to 3 NSDs a week!
Also, congrats on paying off your OSAP debt! I read that on your blog a little while ago. You’re amazing. :)
today was finally a nsd, i also always seem to find some way to spend money. i try to plan nsds during my week. it’s a work in progress!
