Hey, remember when I received my first fraudulent American Express charge back in February? And then I received my second fraud charge earlier this month, followed by my third and fourth fraud charges (both to Netflix) two weeks ago? Well GUESS WHAT!? I received my fifth fraud charge to my CANCELED American Express card a couple of days ago.
I asked again, how are things being charged to my credit card if it was canceled back in February? I got another roundabout answer. She said that if I had recurring charges from before, then they can still be billed to my account. Which totally doesn’t make sense, because 1) I’ve never had recurring charges to my account, and 2) how can it still go through if that credit card number has been canceled? What does “canceling” a card actually do?
I. HATE. American Express.
Which is funny, because I’ve always loved my Amex card. Up until this year, I’ve never had a problem with it. It’s been my #1 card for as long as I’ve had it. But, after I get the refund back, I’m going to cancel my account. I’ve had enough. This is ridiculous. No travel rewards points are worth this much hassle. Epic fail, American Express.

I'm just wondering what the fifth fraud charge is this time? Maybe contacting the companies like netflix to try to figure out how it keeps happening. I remember when my debit card was stolen they were able to trace where the purchases were being made. I'm not sure if its the same thing, but it might be worth a shot.
It was a charge to the U.S. credit bureau, Experian. Which isn't available for Canadians. I'm leaving it up to Amex to figure out why these charges are happening, and then I will be canceling. :)
This just happened to me this past week as well. Cancelled AmEx number, fraudulent charge to Experian.
Really! That's crazy. I hope everything goes OK for you, and you don't experience anymore fraudulent charges!
I've always been lucky with my American Express. Not one fraudulent charge yet. My Visa on the other hand I've had to cancel and get a new card 3 times. I even had charges on it after it was cancelled.
After I received a bill from someone buying a computer with it at Best Buy and seeing it on my bill I called to have the charge reversed and get a new card. Then 3 days later I checked my bill online and it was used at a gas station. I called Visa back and they said they thought I was just disputing the one charge.
At least we're covered when it comes to fraudulent transactions.

How will you cancel the already cancelled card though?
Well I figure if I cancel my current card and close out the entire account, then that should (in theory) stop all charges from going through on any card I ever held with Amex. Canceled or not. Right? Maybe not. I don't know if that's how it works, since I thought canceling a card meant just that. All I know is I don't want to be their customer anymore!
Hehe hopefully. Good luck Krystal!
I apologize if you've already answered this question in a previous post about your fraudulent charges, but were you able to find out your canceled cards were charged? Are your canceled cards still linked to your current active card?
They said that all the charges went through on my card that was canceled back in February. None of the canceled cards are linked to my current active card, except that they all resided in the same account.
Sounds like you made the right call!!
I so can't believe what happened.
I would be interested to know if your credit score gets affected at all….I also wonder what happens if charges still go through to the cancelled cards…will they hold you responsible?

Ugh, that sucks, Krystal! I would be canceling my AMEX if they were having such crazy problems with fraudulent charges on a canceled card. In the past, when I canceled a VISA card, I had absolutely no problems with charges going through on the old card (and it was definitely attempted). What card are you going to replace it with?

I have 2 friends who have had the exact same problem with AMEX. Are these companies so desperate to ge tyour money that they are even willing to let a fradulet charge go through on a canceled card just in case it may be you?? Its absolutley ridiculous and I think the fact that I happen to know two ppl going through this is a bit scary for something that should be a rare occurance.
What an ordeal! I don't blame you at all for canceling – hopefully that will stop the fraudulent charges for good.
Have you considered filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau? I did once as a last resort, and it's amazing how quickly I was escalated to the right people. Problem was solved in a matter of hours when I'd been given the runaround for weeks.

I don't think it is a matter of getting it solve, I think it is a matter of keeping it from happening again.

Honestly, for me, 3 times and you are out of here… You have given AMEX more chances to get it right than I would have. Maybe they were bought out by BOA – Bank of America. They both seem to have a bunch of idiots working for them. Amex should reimburse you 5% of the fraud charges just as an "inconvenience" rebate. I would keep them then…LOL

That would be enough for me to say goodbye… even with the 3% cash back that I get on gasoline purchases…
When do you get your rewards points/cash back??? I just wonder if the amount is worth all the phone calls and time you are going to spend for the other fraud charges that will most likely make their way to you in the upcoming months…
I'd also review your credit reports because most likely if they are doing this and have your info from one account, whos to say they didn't just open a new account in your name…

I have to call in and have the rewards points credited to my account. Which I'm going to do as soon as that fraudulent charge gets reversed on my account. Also yes, I did pull my credit report from both credit bureaus to verify nothing fishy is going on!
I hate American Express to you! Congrats on your freedom
Good 4 u! You shouldn't have to keep dealing with all this crap. It's interesting how they seem to have no idea what's going on.
