Give Me Back My Five Bucks

Photos of my braces

Brace yourself (hahahaha)! I’ve decided to put myself out there and post photos of myself AND my braces. I’ve had multiple requests for photos, so here they are. You all know where I spend every last penny, so you might as well know about the metal in my mouth as well. All $6,890 of it.

These were taken yesterday morning – sorry if I look a little sleepy! Not the greatest quality photos (I was just using the webcam on my Mac), but I’m far too lazy to re-take them or use Photoshop to clean the images up. You can click on the image for a better look.

I will admit that these pictures are kind of cheating because I wasn’t brave enough to do any super close-up shots. :) I’m only 3.5 months into the process, so my teeth are still pretty wonky looking. That being said, these are literally the only photos in existence of me smiling with braces, and also, probably the only photos of myself on this entire blog (besides my first non-anonymous entry back in October).

Honestly Krystal…. you're a pretty woman and your braces look fine (almost non existent). I actually commend you for getting braces because I know as an adult wanting to get them I too am also a little nervous by the reaction I might get from friends, boyfriend, coworkers, etc. For now financially I can't afford them but understand what it feels like to want them as an adult.
Thanks for sharing the picture and keep up the great work (your blog has been so helpful in getting me on the right track!)

  2. Mark says:

Hey Krystal,____Don't be embarrassed. You're doing the right thing by getting the braces and fixing any problems now, while you're young. I should have done the same thing years ago (yes, I admit I was afraid to see a dentist). The longer you wait, there is more chance of developing more serious problems, and the more expensive it gets.____I enjoy reading your blog. Keep up the good work.

  3. I'd get braces in a heartbeat to fix my teeth if I had to do it all over again. Granted, it's easier in elementary or high school… but even now it's worth it. People tell me I have a great smile, when before I used to close my mouth and never smile because of my ugly teeth.

I love my smile! I breathe and eat better. It is so worth it and your braces look non-existent. :)

(I still have a brace on my bottom teeth behind them)

But where are the 'before' pix? ;-)

It's hard to determine value if we don't know how bad your teeth were! /kidding

I resisted braces until my teeth were jacked up to the point where it was interfering with my eating. Thankfully it happened while I was young. Other than the intermittent problems with soreness, it wasn't too bad of an experience.

These are literally the "before" photos. :) Kind of hard to see with the brackets, on, but when I went to the orthodontist a few weeks ago, they said nothing really had shifted and my teeth are nearly what they were when I first got them on in April.

      • jay says:

Oh, your teeth are not really that bad then! I'll look forward to the 'after' photos, but I'm sure not as much as you are.

When I got my braces, they really yanked things around a lot the first couple of visits. I went from having teeth behind other teeth (like, totally behind) to fairly normal looking (except for the braces) pretty quickly… but the first couple of times really hurt!

  5. OCDaniela says:

can't even notice the ones on the top! totally worth it.

  6. munchkin says:

in the first two you cant see anything at all! In the last one I can only kinda see it. Looks awesome!

And in the first two pictures you can hardly see your braces at all!

I am SO happy you posted pic's. I went for my consult last week and was told $6100 but it will only take a year. I wanted to go with clear on top and bottom however, I guess the clear on the bottom will scratch grooves into my top teeth. Seeing yours makes me realize the metal isn't nearly as noticable as I though… and the clear is non-existent.

  11. Mike Holman says:

As others have said, they aren't very noticeable.

In terms of the high cost, maybe it would be better to think of it in terms of $$/tooth? $215 per tooth doesn't seem so bad. ;)

It is so nice to finally see your face! What a beautiful girl you are! Your braces don't look bad at all. My son just got his braces off and his teeth and smile are SOOO beautiful now, it was well worth the money his dad and I spent on them.

  13. Mercedes says:

I think they look great! Going with the clear (or white?) braces was probably a good idea. I remember in middle school and elementary school people would pick some of the strangest colors like orange or blue and it was hard to miss them, but you can barely tell you've got braces!

    • gmbmfb says:

Yeah, I'm really happy that I ended up going with the ceramic top braces. When my sister was a teenager, she used to rock the multi-coloured ones too. I have yet to see an adult wear anything other than the metal or plain white ceramics!

  14. Marsbar says:

Wow, THAT is expensive. My son has had retainers on since he was 8 yrs old, and is only now (he's 13 yrs old) commencing the actual 'braces' part of the process and all told it has cost $7,200. He is supposed to keep those on for 2-3 years and then more retainers for several years after. Not sure how he's going to look, as I'm sure he'll go for his hockey team colours (black/yellow). Should be interesting, but yours are not very noticeable at all! Thanks for sharing…

  15. bswym08 says:

Wow Krystal, you so don't look your age. If it was my first time reading your blog I will say you look between 19 – 20. Good job on the braces, nothing to be embrassed about, you did the right thing.

  16. Barely notice the braces! Are you used to how they feel?

Yeah, I'm used to them now. But they are really uncomfortable every time I go in to get them adjusted. Can't wait until they come off though, so I can feel smooth teeth again. :)

You are too cute. :) I tried to tweet a message to you on twitter today but just tweeted it out to all of twitter instead of @ing you. twitter fail. i agree w/ everyone. you can't tell!!!

Krystal , let me start by saying you are very cute! And this being said I would like you to write a post regarding the qualities of a good blogger – not necessarily financial one. Plus please address the issue of looks – if you weren't so cute, would you have shown pics of yourself?
And really, stop fishing for compliments:-)) (kidding – i know how much people are affected by wearing braces and it's good that you decided to go ahead with it!)

    • gmbmfb says:

Good topic idea, re: the qualities of a good blogger. As for the issue of looks, I really don't think that it matters what a blogger looks like. I'm a fairly shy (maybe also somewhat self-conscious) person, which is why I've never posted photos of myself on my blog before. Especially with braces. :)

  21. Yayyy! They look good :) Before you know it your teeth are all going to fall in line nicely. I had mine for about 2 years (as an adult), it flew by though. Good luck!

  22. Yeah don't notice the braces at all! Your teeth don't look bad either :) I had braces during my last two senior high school years and first two years of university, was really glad to finally get them off. I'm sure your teeth will be brace-free in no time :)

Don’t you wish insurance covered braces??! It would probably lead to many more people heading in to get them done, however.

  25. Danny says:

Are you Chinese? 6890 dollars are too much I think, I spent 4900 dollars. Usually, people pay for cash most likely around 5000 bucks.

  26. Jerry says:

Krystal, you ARE beautiful and you don’t notice the braces at all! Did any of your insurance cover them? That’s a lot of money out of pocket. But, if you saved for them then it’s worth it. I also think it will lead to a lot of hoots and hollers as you walk down the street.
