I have gotten a couple of quotes for the minor renovations I want to do on my place. Looks like the entire project (including labour and materials) will probably cost around $3,500-$4,000. I feel like this is a very reasonable price for the work I want done, and will pursue this option late next week once I’m actually living in my place. This has all been budgeted for, and the money is sitting in my savings account, earmarked for this very purpose.
Yesterday I went into the bank to sign and finalize my mortgage details. My mortgage payments are $1,098/month. But by increasing my payments to $600 with the accelerated bi-weekly option, I will shave almost 4 years off of my mortgage. And that doesn’t even include the lump sum payment I plan on making every year on my mortgage anniversary date. So I’m feeling really confident with my financial situation, and can finally relax and enjoy the process of being a homeowner.
Someone commented on the phone yesterday that I sounded happy. Which I guess might have been surprising to him, since I was kind of mopey last week. And you know, I am happy. The last few days have been really good. I’ve been working extremely hard, and I’m finding the positives in everything.
I have found a desk that I want to buy for $179, less a 20% coupon code that I found online. Clean lines, minimalistic. Perfect. Once I’ve moved in, I will be purchasing it.
I’m headed back home again this weekend. It’s a somewhat unplanned trip, but since this is the last season for the hockey team in my hometown, and they’re in the conference finals for the first (and last) time in franchise history, I need to see them play. I worked for them for 5 years, so it means more to me than just being a fan. :) Oh, and I’m meeting up with Cupcakes and Cash, and the ex-blogger formerly known as Blonde on a Budget aka Dogs and Dollars aka Positive Pennies. :)
Do you have a filing cabinet? I ask because you might want to measure to see if it will fit underneath. I didn't originally plan to every have mine under my desk but in a small office space it sure saves a lot of space.

Nope, I don't have a filing cabinet, just a filing box, which can fit pretty much anywhere. I think I'll have room in my office "nook" to put some sort of shelving unit in, as well as that desk.
I have that same desk in my office now (a replica of the MUCH more expensive Parsons Desk from West Elm), but I got mine from Overstock! WAY cheaper and $2.95 shipping! I don't know if it's the same for Canada, but it's worth a look! I know it says student desk, but it's regular size and fits a normal office chair perfectly! http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Student-Desk…
Yes! I first saw it on the West Elm website as well. I LOVE the metal version, and still really want it. Maybe even worth the money to me, since I'm at my desk all the freaking time. But I felt like it would scuff up my Macbook Pro, so am opting for the cheaper version, at a different website. :) I checked out Overstock and they don't ship that desk to Canada.
I caution you on taking low bid on your renovations. Unless you are knowledgeable in home construction a less reputable company may take advantage of that. Also be sure that the contractor is licensed, is following all the code requirements and it doesn't hurt to check their record at BBB.
On a happier note, congratulations on the purchase.
Yep, I made sure to do internet research on the companies, and checked out their BBB record. The person I'm probably going to go with has excellent reviews on different websites.
I want to get new laminate floors put in (right now it's 1/2 laminate & 1/2 gross green carpet), rip out a built-in desk, re-wire the cable outlet, fix a couple tiles in the shower, and fix two doors. And paint. I can do the painting myself, but for the right price, I will just get him to do it instead because he'll do a better job than me, and I really don't have the time to do it.
Around $1,000 per month for your mortgage payments is not so bad. That is about what we pay but that also includes our taxes and insurance. Hope your trip home this weekend leads to some fun and relaxation.
Congratulations on the purchase :) It's so much worth it in the end when you have your own place, you'd rather pay your mortgage and own something in the end than just keep paying rents and realize that you will never become the owner!

Say hi to Cupcakes and LC for me!
I'm meeting up with FB and Sonia myself tomorrow. Even made my popular black sesame cupcakes with matcha cream cheese icing to boot! :)
