Alright, so I just checked out the rates for the indoor rock climbing gym I used to go to in North Vancouver. They’re not as bad as I remember them being (a 3-month membership is only $209, and a 12-month membership is $529). I am getting super motivated to start climbing again – especially during the summer months when the gym is a little quieter, and I don’t have field hockey to play. Climbing is a seriously hard workout, but it’s fun and social at the same time. The only problem is, I don’t have a climbing partner anymore! I wouldn’t mind climbing with a beginner, but none of my friends seem interested. And I don’t want to be one of those people that posts partner-wanted ads at the climbing gym either.
You would think in the 3 years I’ve lived in Vancouver, and with all the hiking and outdoorsy stuff I do, I would have found at least a few people who are into climbing.
So, I am going to have to expand my search to acquaintances. Or take up bouldering (boo), or use auto-belay, which I still don’t trust. And even then, it’s not the same.

That's the hard part — finding an exercise buddy to keep you on stream and on track. I know that there's always the old method: post a sign at the gym to see if anyone is in your area (shared ride), but having a neighbour is always easier.
If you think climbing is an obscure sport, try fencing, especially foil (one of the three weapons). All the local clubs (three) are competitive and focus on the other two weapons, or use the foil for teaching the beginners but they then stream everyone into the other weapons as soon as they finish the initial classes. The clubs that do have a sport fencer/foil program are all over an hour's drive each way.
Keep plugging away and you should be able to find a partner. Worst case would be the BF.

Sadly, the whole 4-provinces away thing doesn't work in either of our favours. I'm in Ottawa and have been searching for a climbing partner for YEARS since mine moved away.
Have you tried climbfind.com? I've had good luck finding my climbing partners there.
I've never heard of that site before. Thanks, I'll check it out!
I'd go but I'd probably fall down and break my neck.
I heard about climbfind.com recently, let us know if that works! And if only you lived in NY, I would love to climb with you even though I'm a total beginner! :)
