I had been saving my Amazon gift cards through Swagbucks (affiliate link) to buy the Kindle. Originally, I was against e-readers (and I still am, sort of), because I love the feeling of real books. I love the smell of them, opening them up for the first time, the feeling of holding one, and being able to lend them to friends. What I do not like, however, is the weight. I like bringing at least 2 books with me on every trip, but that can get heavy! Especially when I put them in my purse for the plane ride. And since I’m making it a point to sell most of my books anyway, I thought – why not just buy e-books from now on?
My plan was to use my Swagbucks to earn Amazon gift cards, since I can’t really justify spending the money to buy one outright. I currently have $50 worth of cards, and the Kindle is only $139 + tax. Of course, I won’t buy it until I can get it for free – and also I don’t want to buy one until the next version comes out.
BUT when I went to visit Amazon.ca, I clicked on the link to Kindle and saw that it directed me to the Amazon.com website. Hmm. I’ve been hoarding Amazon.ca gift cards since the fall, not .com. So I tried to enter in one of the codes. It doesn’t work. FAIL.
So my awesome plan went out the window. And I don’t know what I’m going to do now. I don’t think that I like the idea of e-readers enough to buy one with my own money. But that could change, depending on what the next generation of e-readers brings. And on the bright side, at least I will have some gift cards saved up for Christmas presents this year! :)
P.S. I wanted to let you know that I’ve created a brand new Facebook page for this blog! I originally had a Facebook Profile Page, but have switched over to a Fan Page because I think it suits the interaction better. So hopefully you will hop onto Facebook and “LIKE” me! :)

Krystal,
I too have been hoarding Swagbucks for over a year now and feel your pain… I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Amazon.ca / Amazon.com GC thing just got worse :(
- Recently Swagbucks changed things up if your address is a Canadian one you are no longer allowed to cash in for the Amazon.com GC – but IF you 'moved' to an American address then you can relax everything is okay.
Re: The Kindle versus Kobo…friends don't let friends buy a Kobo :)
I noticed your personal finance goals include "travel" and so speaking as someone who took a 3G Kindle through 30+ countries there is no substitute for being able to read/download books and access the internet from pretty much everywhere (granted fine it didn't work in Bosnia and Bosnia & Herzegovina) but you get my drift.
Depending on whether you've added the GC numbers to your Amazon account already I may be willing to trade you for .com GC :)
KindleRTW, you can still purchase amazon.com gc's at swagbucks even if you live in Canada. They are available to US and Canadian residents (according to the fine print) and I've been doing it since I started. Just ordered 2 more tonight. I've never had a problem.
As far as the e-reader goes … I have hard really good things about the sony ereader and the nook. I've been told that the nook is not good for Canadians, however. Most people I've talked to recommend the sony for canadians. Having said that, I am saving my agc's to purchase a tablet. Shouldn't be long now.
Yeah, I have a similar problem. Recently redeemed 4, 5$ amazon.COM gift cards (20$). Waiting for them to come. Today I found out they don't work on amazon.ca……. I was about to hang myself. Searched all day for any ".com" – ".ca" swaps and stumbled upon this one. Contact me if you are interested in trading my 4, 5$ amazon.com gift cards for 4, 5$ amazon.ca gift cards. Although I have no idea how we can trust eachother, lol. If anyone else is interested, please do so.
