January 2011 Goals

Well it’s a new year and I’m really hoping to hit all of my monthly goals for 2011. This will require me to plan far ahead and get extremely organized with my money. My #1 priority this year is to save up for a down payment, so every dollar counts!

January will see me go on 2 business trips (one to Toronto and one to Seattle) – which will mean that I’m gone about 25% of the month. When in Toronto I’m hoping to see a bunch of different friends when I’m not working. All of my meals, transportation, and accommodation costs are paid for, but I added an additional $100 into my Entertainment budget (usually it’s $100/month) just in case.

January 2011 Goals:

  • $700 into Retirement Portfolio
  • $100 into Travel Fund
  • Make an additional $1,500 above and beyond my FT job
  • Sell at least 1 thing on eBay or Craigslist
  • Go to 1 business seminar
  • Run at least 1x/week
  • Work out at least 3x/week
  • Go through my wardrobe and donate at least 10 items

Ongoing 2011 Annual Goals:

  • No buying lunch, snacks or coffee during the work week
  • No buying clothing, shoes or accessories until May 19, 2011

Ooh boy, you're going to be a busy lady this month! All of these goals are wonderful. I do have a question though, maybe you've answered it in previous posts but I can't remember … do you not pay car insurance???

Does running 1x a week go into the working out 3x a week category? Will you still do this on your business trips?
I listed some stuff on amazon/ebay yesterday! It’s a good goal.

That sounds really tough but doable. I didn't it for a while but now I've incorporated a little flexibility budgeting $50 per month for clothes and having eating out in my entertainment budget. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

Great goals and good luck with them.
I am on the same ban, for not buying lunch at work, except I am doing on a month to month intervals. Wish me luck, this is a tough one, but am determined.

"Sell at least 1 thing on eBay or Craigslist"

I'm very interested in doing this kind of selling. Would you be willing to share some tips (or maybe a how to post) on how you do it? I've sold a few items on eBay (some were a profit, others were a loss -> shipping fees using Canada Post have meant that I don't tend to make much more than a few dollars). I think Craigslist has the potential to be much more profitable (as one could arrange to meet a local buyer and thus save shipping) but I'm wondering what the best approach is. I'm mainly looking to sell quite a few used low cost items (under $50 or under $100 like books, some electronics).

I wrote a short "guide to eBaying" a few years ago, which is probably still quite relevant.

With Craigslist, I find it hard to buy and sell because it's just not very user friendly. I mostly sell event tickets and even have had some luck with ski gear. BF has sold a guitar & amp, juicer, and some other random things. So it does work, and it's free, so why not! I've also bought ski gear and event tickets through Craigslist, but I really hate meeting people. I think I've been watching too many murder shows, lol.

I usually end up selling popular items on Craigslist and leaving more specific and expensive things to eBay, since it isn't really worth my time to make a $1 profit on a book. Recently a friend has been selling her stuff through a consignment store and I think I might try that too.

I really like how things are set up with your budget. I like your NetworthIQ thing in the sidebar, too. I'm going to use that – I've seen a couple different versions of that around.
I'm guessing that your rental insurance was paid in a lump sum like your car insurance? Anyway, nice site. :)

$250/month on food? How is it possible, even for a petite woman, to subside on that? $8 and change per day! Come on!

    • gmbmfb says:

I actually usually spend around $200/month on food. $50/week is plenty for me to live on, and you'll find most other PF bloggers spend about the same as I do each month. In fact, I haven't spent more than that (on average) for the past 3 or 4 years. We prepare most of our meals at home using simple ingredients, use coupons, buy what's on sale, and we try to stay away from packaged/processed foods.
