December 2010 Goals

Okay, the month of December is a bit of a spendy one. BF and I are going over to the island for Christmas, and there is a chance we are going on a week-long hiking/backpacking trip (brrr!). So my Miscellaneous category reflects those expenses, plus any last-minute presents I might need to buy.

For those of you who are new to my blog, currently we are just a single income family. BF has been in school since May, so we have been living on just my income since then. Starting in February when he finishes up his program, he will become fully certified and can get a job. If he works hard, his earning potential is much greater than mine … so I am excited to see how everything changes come the new year.

December Goals:

  • Make an extra $1,500 above and beyond my FT income
  • $700 into Retirement Portfolio
  • $100 into Travel Fund
  • Make 1 extra car payment
  • Work out 3-4x/week
  • Get organized with my blogging
  • Create 2011 goals and recap 2010 goals
  • Figure out travel plans for the first half of 2011. There is a chance I might be traveling for work again.

Great goals Krystal. $1,500 in extra income would be great!

I can't wait to see what goals you set for 2011 :-)

What do you mean by "Get organized with my blogging"?

I'd like to feel like I'm on top of both of my blogs. Right now, because my schedule is so busy, I feel like I'm scrambling all the time to play catch up. Most nights I don't get home until as late as 10pm, and then I'm up writing until well past midnight, only to get up for work at 6am. I don't want to feel rushed anymore.

I've been using miscellaneous for any unexpected expense, and also as a $100 budget buffer. So for example, if I want to go to Costco but it will put me over my monthly food expenses, I have that buffer where I will still be within my monthly budget. Or if I have to take an emergency trip home, or buy a last minute birthday present, etc.

how do you work out the financials of being a single income family? do you give the bf an allowance each month or does he have his own money (savings?) for personal spending and you're just paying the majority of major expenses? sorry if this is super personal, just curious!

I actually pay all of the expenses, and BF brings in some money when he can by working odd jobs. Because we haven't combined our finances yet, it gets a bit tricky. But he's been doing a really good job limiting his personal spending. Once he starts to earn a regular income, we will combine our finances and go from there. But until then, I usually take cash out of the bank for him when he needs it.

I think BF owes you a large bunch of Roses and an expensive night out, once he starts to earn. You have done an awesome job of making sure he gets his studies done and paying all bills etc. Plus savings and Misc. And February is not too far away now.

By the way I,m not advocating this kind of spending as a weekly thing but as a very special Thank you.

  15. $1500 extra income sure helps, especially if you’re on one income. Nice that you’re bringing home the bacon and keeping costs down :)

  17. PS I would like to get organized with my blogging too. I’ve been getting only 6 hours of sleep a night on average (sounds like you are too). I feel like a zombie lol!
