So I was browsing VRBO for accommodation in NYC, and we found one minutes from Times Square for only $185/night! It sleeps 4-5 people (one queen, 2 doubles & a couch). The location is perfect, the apartment has gotten good reviews, and it’s the right price. We are very close to booking it, and if we do, I will be well under my $600 accommodation budget at $462.50. :) It will be less if more people decide to come on the trip.
As for Toronto, that’s proving to be a bit harder. Most of the apartments are in the suburbs and I prefer to stay right downtown. So I might bite the bullet and pay more than my $200 budget for 4 nights. Although I might just stay in a hostel. Wouldn’t be ideal but for $28/night I could do it, and it’s not like I haven’t done it before.

I'm from Toronto and know that there are many great last minute hotel deals that you can get on http://www.hotels.ca or http://www.priceline.com
You have to pay in advance but if you book within the 4-star category, you will always get a great deal. I've used both sites many times and they are very reliable. I booked two nights in downtown Boston at the Delta for $120 each night, taxes in! May be worth a look….

Yup, I agree, http://www.priceline.com has great deals. You can bid for 1/2 the price, you just don't know which hotel you get, but you know you will get a hotel in the downtown area and 3.5 stars or 4 stars. If you choose the category, you will get whatever hotel is offered in that category.

I did check out Priceline, and the deals seem comparable to the apartment I checked out. I could probably get it cheaper through Priceline if I bid, but I don't like not knowing what hotel I'm staying at and also most hotels don't come with a kitchen or the ability to sleep 4-6 people – which is important.

Eww, trust me, don't stay at a hostel in Toronto.
You should really try the AirBnB.com service, it's great! You can find some good places downtown, or if you want to pay a little less you can find a place just a touch further out but on the subway line (like mine!). No matter where you stay in Toronto it's going to take 30mins to get anywhere: walking, driving, transit.
Let me know if you want to see my listing, I could give you a discount!

I am from Toronto as well. There are a bunch of hostels in the King St / Spadaina area. Some are more shady than others, but you are right down town. Walking distance to Rogers Center (Jays). There are also some cheaper hotels a little bit outside of the downtown core, probably around the $100 range, give or take. It would not be a bad idea if stayed a bit outside the downtown core, but on the subway line. This way you can jump on the Subway and be downtown within mintues. Just a thought!

Earlier this year New York was considering a ban on short term rentals like those found on VRBO. http://travel.usatoday.com/destinations/dispatche…
Not sure if it ever went any further, but something to take into consideration I suppose.
ALso I stayed in one of those short term rentals this summer and it was AWFUL. pictures are misleading and so are the descriptions sometimes. i would look for a cheap hotel – at least you know what you are getting.
Also some of the landlords are scammers – they say they will meet you to get a key and are late leaving you waiting outside.
I had absolutely the best experience when I booked a rental condo a few months ago in Hawaii. It's best to find an apartment or condo building with a front desk staff or concierge service so that the keys will be there when you arrive, and you aren't dependent on the actual owner meeting you.
I really want an apartment or condo unit for the ability to cook our own meals (saved us a ton of money in Hawaii), and for the added bonus of more people being able to stay with us without having to book their own accommodation.
Also there are some really nasty cheap hotels out there, with tons of misleading photos on the internet.

If you're still looking and AirBnB.com is sort of what you're looking for, you might also want to try http://roomorama.com/ and http://www.crashpadder.com/ too.

i would really, really advise staying as far away from Times Square in NYC as possible *shudder* not only is it permanently as crowded as a mall on Christmas Eve but also, for someone so savvy about spending, it's SUCH an expensive tourist trap!
however, speaking as someone from Toronto, there's a new eco-green hostel that just opened on College street (Little Italy) near Kensington Market, which seems much less sketchy than all the other Toronto hostels–really pretty design too! http://www.theplanettraveler.com/, perhaps worth checking out. also, the Drake Hotel (Queen West) is fairly inexpensive for one of their crash pad rooms, and in a really great area of the city (i'm not going to compare it to Kitts Beach, but if you wander along Queen you'll see that it has a slight Broadway/Burrard type vibe in terms of shops and restaurants…)

I know that Times Square is expensive and touristy, but that's kind of how I wanted my first NYC experience to be. :) We are looking in other areas of the city, but my friend and I both know we want to be downtown and central to everything.
Thanks for the tips on accommodation in Toronto! I'll definitely check those places out.
