Early yesterday morning on the drive down to Seattle I got a speeding ticket. It was right where the highway turns into the Canada/USA border area, and an unmarked police car was just waiting there to catch speeders. There was not a single car in front of me or behind me that I could see, since it was very early in the morning. Still, I was speeding, and I have to pay $196 for my ticket. I get a $25 “discount” if I pay within 30 days which brings it down to $171.
This is my first speeding ticket ever in Canada. I got a speeding ticket last year on the I-5 heading down to Seattle.
Luckily, because I was going down for a trade show, I get a generous mileage refund from my company. I calculated it last night and I will be getting $260 back for my mileage. Which will more than pay for my ticket and the gas used to get me there and back. In fact, I think I’ll end up with an extra $50-60.
Which means that technically I won’t have to pay for my ticket out of my monthly budget. But still. That’s $171 extra I could have had this month.
Oh and in other money news, my co-workers wanted to head to the outlet mall on our way back up to Canada. I was wary because I’m still on a shopping ban (clothing/accessories/shoes). But I did it! I ended up buying something for my dad for Christmas, and a long-sleeve dry fit top from the Nike store that I had been meaning to buy – and was within the shopping ban rules because it is necessary for my field hockey uniform. I thought I could make it until after Christmas to buy the top, but seeing as it snowed last night, I thought it was for the best to wear more than a t-shirt and skirt to my 2 games this weekend. Total damage? For both my dad’s present and my shirt, I spent $69.98. My sister will reimburse me her half for my dad’s present when I see her next.

Ooo ouch! Darn, I should have told you that my friend got away from a ticket at that location by saying she got too excited to see that there's no line up at the border line and wanted to go shopping really badly and the police was nice enough to let her go :(
Great that you got a good deal on your shirt though and that the reimbursement from your company can cover your ticket cost! :) lucky!

I'm too scared to speed. I see people get caught all the time and I think: ouch
Sorry to hear about it.

That's a big ticket. I'm glad the mileage reimbursement will help you out. Yes you could have used the money for other things but it's better than trying to find that money to pay off a ticket :P

Too bad about the ticket – but sounds like you made out okay with the mileage reimbursement.
LOVE the US outlet malls…

What are the Canadian rules about appealing your ticket? In the US you can appeal and the judge will usually knock $50-100 off your total if you have a good driving record.
I'm not sure what the rules are for appealing tickets. Bottom line, I was speeding. Sure, there was nobody in sight, very early in the morning, just coming off the highway. So I'm not sure what the basis of my appeal would be?

Is that a BC law about haveing the money off for paying within 30 days. In Ontario that dosant apply. Plus they slap you with a surcharge. How fast were you going ?
Also I read your linked post about your ticket in the US. You can pay any US ticket at the post office in the US before you leave. Some officers in the states take you directly to the post office to pay it before you leave the country.
It says on the back of the ticket that if you pay within 30 days, you will get $25 off. I'm not sure how fast I was going. He didn't tell me, but it was right at the point where it turns from highway to 30km/hr.
Also, I don't think there's an option to pay through a post office in the USA. I checked the Washington State DMV, and they only list payment methods as online, over the phone, in person, or mail. It also doesn't say anything on the ticket about an option to pay through the post office (I still have the ticket).
I know we've been stopped in the states speeding and paid at the post office several times. less thewn 2 yrs ago.

Yikes! Is your insurance going to go up? In the US it definitely leads to higher premiums. Good luck!
According to the ICBC website, no my insurance will not go up based on the offense cited on the speeding ticket.

Ooh I'm surprised you got a speeding ticket up in Canada (those RCMP's…).
BF and I have gotten some speeding tickets on the I-5- they're really good at catching us Canadians- almost seems like they target the BC license plate lol!
That's pretty good you had the willpower to only spend $68 at the Premier outlets!

You aren’t having a lot of car related luck, did you ever get your ICBC issues sorted that you mentioned a couple of weeks ago?

In the states you get a court date for moving violations. You can pay the ticket or go to court. The one time I got a moving violation the judge flat out dismissed it and I didn't have to pay a cent. And I didn't have to explain myself either. She just listened to the cop and then told me she wasn't making a decision on my guilt or innocence and that the ticket was dismissed.
I had 2 parking violations. One, I appealed by e-mail and ended up having to pay the whole $150. The other was a mistake and I appealed by e-mail and they dismissed it.
I think if Canada has some similar appeal process and you have a little time, it might be worth it to appear in court. I think that price is excessive and they could possibly either dismiss or knock off even more.
