How do you make money at home or online?

Answering another Formspring question:

Hi Krystal, do you know any good work from home, or online business which I could work on to earn. Me and my wife are eagerly looking for an online work, but failed so far. Thank you.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to earn a decent amount of money through my freelance business, through this blog, as well as with part-time jobs. Through these side projects, I have been able to boost my overall income by about 20-25%.

I work from home through my freelance business on a casual basis. I do graphic design, print layout, website maintenance, brochures, pamphlets, signage, etc. I only work with existing clients and selective word of mouth because I just don’t have the time or desire to take my business to the next level.

My income from this blog has been picking up, but for the last 3.5 years my earnings have been minimal. I receive a Google Adsense cheque every 2 months, and get sporadic advertising income through links on my sidebar. Of course, without this blog I wouldn’t have my gig with the Toronto Star, so despite the small amounts of money made on GMBMFB, it has turned into something bigger.

Unfortunately I’m not sure of any legitimate work-from-home or online business ventures you could participate in that aren’t self-made. My advice would be to find something that you and your wife love doing, and see how you can leverage that online. It might take a while to get going (it has taken me almost 4 years of nurturing with this blog before I was able to make any money), so you have to stick with it. For example, if you can make something crafty, you can open up a virtual store and start selling through Etsy.com. I have a few friends who make jewelry on that site, and another one that sells photography.

Does anyone else know of any legitimate work-from home ventures, or any suggestions on how to make money online?

  1. Mystery shopping! There are a number of scams out there, but there’s much more legitimate stuff. Look on the forums at Volition.com for lots of real companies.

I agree entirely about finding something you love, then translating that to the online medium. Make sure it’s something scaleable if you want it to be “passive income”.
Loads of folks are doing very well online and it lowers the entry-point which is fantastic news. I don’t hear much about eBay anymore but I personally know some folks who made very significant incomes by finding a niche there and working it.

If you're artsy, I would suggest etsy! It's a great place to post and sell home-made items. In fact, I'm going to start up a page on etsy within a week to sell some well-priced home-made christmas cards.

I was wondering this for months, and hit upon something last week – DemandStudios.com. I just began writing for them. You won't become rich, but for me it's about $50/mo I make from my couch after my 9-5 job. I use it to pay for treats I'd otherwise forgo – hair highlights, happy hour, clothes. They pay through PayPal. *MANY* people (aka real writers, like people with writers resumes) hate the site because articles pay $7.5 to $20, but if you write about what you know it goes fast. The articles are mostly for eHow and LiveStrong.com, etc. Of course, I hate eHow articles.

  13. Hey guys i wish to share with you a way i make $500 daily and i only spend 15 minutes doing it a day! Anyone can do it, you dont NEED to have a website. I strongly suggest you check their site out as there is really a brilliant video that explains each thing you need to know. Check them out at Mobile Monopoly. That’s the name of the System and i suggest if you own a web site that you at-least go and take a peak, you wont regret it…

The answer depends on how much income you want. If you're looking for less than $500-$1000/month, then there are a lot of options. In addition to Demand Studios, Bright Hub (pays $10 USD/article) and Text Broker (pay is quite variable) are sites that pay for writing. It is also worth having a look at Jobs for Bloggers hosted by ProBlogger.

Beyond that, there are sites where you one can compete to do a wider range of tasks including programming, graphic design and writing; elance, odesk and guru are the best well known examples of this. It can be difficult to land work there and/or have the work be worthwhile financially.

Here's some questions for Krystal though:
How do you balance PT/freelance work with the duties of a FT position? (Do you keep them separate? Does the FT know about the freelance work?)
How do you bill for freelance projects? Do you bill hourly? Do you bill per project?
Do you have any informal rules or guidelines about freelance work (e.g. tasks that pay under $100 are not worth pursuing; tasks that would take over a month to complete and get paid should be avoided)

First of all I appreciate anyone running a blog. Now for my comment: It does not matter how many people post their opinions since your reputation is only in the opinions of other people. I, for example run a few websites where I review some products you can purchase in the internet. if you run an educational site then does it matter what other visitors think about your comments? of course not. There are many persons here with different opinions. don’t base your own self baed only on others opinions. Bye for now.
