November 2010 Goals

November’s budget does not include any Christmas shopping that I may do. I have $400 in my Savings Fund that I have earmarked for presents. I also have a $20 credit with Groupon, and $30 worth of Amazon.ca giftcards thanks to Swagbucks. Plus, BF and I aren’t doing presents for each other this year. Instead, I am selling my Wii and with the money, we are going to either buy an HDPVR or Playstation 3. Right now I’m leaning towards the HDPVR because after the initial cost of it, there is nothing else to buy. Whereas with the PS3, we have to buy accessories and games which will end up costing hundreds of dollars I’m sure.

We are planning one weekend trip home for a friend’s wedding (the same couple who got married in Hawaii are now having a ceremony/reception in my hometown), and we have a concert to go to (tickets already purchased in October’s budget) … so other than that, I don’t anticipate any out-of-the-ordinary spending. The wedding present will come out of this budget in the Miscellaneous category.

November Goals:

  • Work out 3x/week
  • Go to the gym once per week (do at least 60 min. of cardio + weights)
  • Make an extra $1000 above and beyond my regular FT income
  • $600 into Retirement Portfolio
  • $300 into Savings Fund
  • Sell one thing on Craigslist or eBay
  • Contact college for transcripts (going to start the process of transferring credit to my new program)
  • Shop around for car insurance (basic has to be through ICBC, but I want to get 3 quotes for comprehensive and collision)

When Telus came to our door with there 15/15/15 deal we called Shaw and they dropped our bill by $50 and gave us a HDPVR free for a year along with a bunch of HD channels. Always worth calling and seeing what they can do for you. We now pay $80 a month for phone, internet and cable (with like a million channels).

We also have a PS3 and if I had to choose, I would take the HDPVR, recording shows and watching them on my time without commercials has changed my life ( extreme I know, but I have a baby).

Agreed, I think an HDPVR is a better thing to have in our household. Unfortunately, Telus TV isn't available in our area yet (which doesn't really make sense because we don't live that far out of Vancouver). So for now we are stuck with Shaw. But I will definitely ask to see if there's anything they can do as far as promotions go.

Also, what do you find the most efficient/free way to earn swagbucks? Do you just go the distance or is there I good way to earn them quickly without buying stuff.

The easiest way to earn Swagbucks for me, is by using their search engine. I do most of my internet searches through their website, and every 3 or 4 times I'll get a message saying I've earned X amount of Swagbucks. Another good way is referrals. You earn 100% of the Swagbucks from every referral up to a max of 1000 Swagbucks per referral. I have never bought anything through Swagbucks to earn points before.

I got the the free HDPVR with Shaw, I just threatened (nicely) to switch to TELUS and they countered.( I live in Squamish and I don't think we even get Telus out here either).

an HDPVR is no good unless you have HD. For some reason I didn't think you had cabple. A cheaper alternative to a PVR is an external harddrive connected to your box. You can tape things and watch them in either HD or regular – depending on what channel you taped from. I got mine for $80!

That looks like a very workable budget, plus you seem to have Christmas all sewn up well done.

Looks like it has already been suggested, but calling your cable provider and saying you are looking to switch to another provider is usually a good way to get an HDPVR. We're in Toronto, but my boyfriend just called our provider (Rogers) because he learned he was able to get a better deal through Bell; their response was to say that they would beat the deal, and he has ended up with (among other things) a free HDPVR.

It is a really great tool to have though, especially if you like TV! For us, it is saving having to pay for shows "On Demand" if we miss an episode, and they threw in a bunch of "Super Channels" for free that show all sorts of movies, so we don't need to rent anymore :)

  13. I still can't believe your rent is $150 in the GVRD! That's like cheaper than the hotel rent for people living in the Single Room occupancies down in the Downtown Eastside lol!
