So many places to visit!

One of the biggest changes in my life since I’ve gotten out of debt is the ability to travel. Before I was out of debt, I never traveled anywhere. I couldn’t afford to! Now, whenever I take a trip somewhere, I am comfortable in the knowledge that my trip is 100% paid off before I even board the airplane. It makes me feel free; like I can go anywhere and do anything because there isn’t this weight holding me down.

Over the next few years, I want to do a lot of traveling, and here are the places I hope to visit within the next 7 years (or at least before any talk of children – scary just thinking about it):

  • Toronto (tentatively Spring 2011)
  • New York City (tentatively Fall 2011)
  • Cuba (tentatively Winter 2011)
  • San Francisco
  • Jamaica
  • Thailand/Cambodia
  • Russia (Sochi 2014!)
  • Kenya/Tanzania
  • China
  • Nepal
  • Peru

I still have no real interest in traveling to Europe. I always thought that over time I’d get the urge to explore that area of the world, but I’m just not feeling it. I guess it’s because Europe as a whole is pretty expensive. Sure, you can backpack and stay in hostels and certainly do things cheaply (or stay in Eastern Europe), but I don’t think I want that kind of experience in Europe. There are too many places to see and things to do that I feel like I would enjoy it better when I’m older (perhaps our first trip when we retire early), when we have more disposable income. Best to save the First World travel for later in life. For now, I’m more interested in doing the trips that are more adventurous and might be enjoyed more while I’m young and able-bodied. Like trips to climb mountains (Kilimanjaro!), or go rock climbing (Thailand!), or go hiking (Peru, Nepal, China!).

It’s still extremely sad that we didn’t get to take that year off and travel the world, but I am so happy where we are right now. And I know that if we work hard, we’ll be able to reward ourselves with traveling anywhere in the world that we desire. All while having everything else that we want too – like careers that we love, financial security (and a debt-free life), a home to call our own, and friends and family that care about us.

That's quite a great list. Look forward to reading about various adventures. NYC is a great place, probably one of my favorite places ever!

  7. Oh please please please yes Toronto in Spring 2011 :D :D :D :D

NYC is awesome. I'd like to go back and spend more time there. NYC and San Francisco, but I think I might wait until we're in the States before doing that.

China is where I'll be next year — Beijing and Shanghai, so I'm thrilled about that. What about Japan??

Great list!! I love NYC and am hoping to get back there many times. I'd love to see San Francisco as well. My list would include NYC and Boston (again and again and again), SF/Pacific Coast Highway, Hawaii, the UK, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Brazil.

China! I love China! I visit that country once per year!

There is amazing history, the hostels are ridiculously cheap and amazingly beautiful! I have never had a bad experience in a Chinese Hostel… they are more like cheaper hotels.

    Street food is amazing!

I go to China for less than $1800 and stay around a month. The most expensive part is the flight! But, I try to travel off-season and stay off the beaten path as much as possible.

Yeah, BF and I aren't really touristy type people. We'd do inexpensive things and stay off the beaten path too. Although I think for my first trip to China, it might be with my parents who aren't exactly into roughing it.
