Answering a question

Someone asked this on my Formspring account:

Did you “come out” to your co-workers? If so, what was their reaction and do you feel overly financially exposed now that your numbers are connected to your true identity?

A couple of my co-workers know about my blog and my new Toronto Star blog. My boss knows as well – because I wanted to make sure that having a part-time job on the side was going to be okay with the company. Although I don’t think that anybody reads either of my blogs on a regular basis. But if they did, I would be okay with it. My mom reads every single one of my Toronto Star articles, and then she e-mails me to tell me what she thinks about it. Moms! :)

Other than my co-workers and a few select friends and family, I haven’t told anybody in my real life. And I don’t think I will. On one hand, I would really love to show them and maybe they might be interested in what I’m writing about – but on the other hand, if they ever take the initiative to research about personal finance themselves, chances are that one day they will end up stumbling across something I’ve written. The Canadian PF community is quite small. Who knows, maybe people I know are already reading one of my blogs and just haven’t told me. Or  maybe they’ve been reading my blog for a while, and didn’t even realize that it was me writing it! That’s what happened with Blonde on a Budget. She’s my friend in real life and had been reading my blog for months before realizing that it was me. :)

As for feeling overly exposed, well I don’t feel that way at all. Maybe I should, but I don’t. I’m comfortable with the amount of information I share, and I feel like personal finances should be spoken about more freely than they are. I have gotten rid of my sidebars though, and am thinking of rearranging my NetworthIQ. But other than that, nothing will change with how I share my information. I think that it’s important to track and show my spending, and I really think it really helps people to see what others are spending their money on, and how much they are spending.

  1. I wonder if that's the same with my friends — them reading my blog and not knowing it's me. I'm happy if that's the case, if I can help them.

I wouldn't want them to know it was me though, although I wouldn't lie if they asked me my numbers (which they wouldn't as talking about money is apparently not polite).

Still, it is kind of weird if anyone else knew. BF knows but I don't think he's interested.

I,m very secretive about my blog, which is one of the reasons why you won,t find my photo anywhere. I think I am embarrassed to have friends know the financial mess i have gotten myself into, especially as they are all homeowners, and looking comfortably towards retiring.
