So I announced last week ago that I was on a shopping ban until after Christmas. I haven’t bought anything since mid-July, and I’m pretty pleased with that.
Except for now, I need to buy a white dry fit long sleeve top. Why? For my field hockey uniform. Our jerseys are short sleeved and during the winter, it will get a little cold to just be wearing a t-shirt and skirt. So I’d love to get a dry fit top to wear underneath. Can’t be cotton, because I sweat a lot and cotton isn’t exactly moisture wicking. Has to be white so that it looks uniform with everyone else. Okay, so I don’t need the top, but I want it and will be pretty cold and uncomfortable without it during the winter months. I would wear it to games, as well as some practices and even boot camp class (which will continue outdoors throughout the winter).
Currently, I don’t own anything long sleeve for working out – except for a waffle shirt and a wool quarter-zip – both of which will not work.
Part of me says, it’ll only be $30-40, what’s the big deal? I might even be able to find it cheaper on eBay. But another part of me is really bothered by ending the shopping ban with over 2 months to go, just to buy something I don’t necessarily need.

But it sounds like you DO need it, and it would come in handy for multiple occasions. Can your shopping ban be amended so you only don't buy things that are just pretty or neat?

Well since you bough your hockey uniform during your ban, i don't see why you couldn't buy this piece. For me this ban was more about purchasing clothing you do not necessarily need.

I wouldn't say that it's something you don't 'necessarily' need… to me, that would be justifying a new purse, for field hockey lol. I wouldn't beat yourself up over buying this shirt. It's going to be a cold winter, in BC!

Being financially responsible means that you weigh these decisions. I think you do need it.

To me, it sounds like a “need” (for you) and at $30-40 it’s a good investment, especially since you plan on wearing it often. Maybe play one field hockey game first, without it, and see just how much you need one. It might sway your decision more towards “need.”

Like I said on Twitter, I think a shopping ban is about being aware of want vs. need. I also think it's about making conscious choices about shopping. It sounds like the top would be a good investment, and is something that you do need. It's not just "I have a blue shirt and everyone else has a white shirt and I want to match" or something like that. It's an item that is missing from your wardrobe and you'll get a lot of use out of it. On top of that, it sounds like you're not just going to go buy the first one you see or the most expensive option. I say to go for it.

I’m with everyone else. I used to play field hockey and I know exactly what you are saying about the sweating and the cold. I think this is a much needed purchase!
And like Vickie said, you did purchase your uniform during your ban …. ;-)

I think this is a "need" purchase. You don't want to get sick by catching a cold (maybe it's a myth) but it's better to be warm than cold! :)

Between spending $30 and freezing, I would choose spending the money. :-)
Let's just say field hockey stuff is exempt from the ban. But don't go crazy!
Not sure if they ship to Canada but Campmor has great sales: http://www.campmor.com/clothing/women/shirts-tops…

You DO need it. It's not like you have one and you want another one. GO for it.

Although I do agree that if you need it, you should buy it.
That being said… Don't you have any other long-sleeved shirts that can do the same job?
Maybe it wouldn't be white… But some other colour that would work?
Believe it or not, but I do not have any long-sleeve fitness shirts – not even a long-sleeve cotton shirt – in any colour. I have one fleece waffle shirt and one wool shirt for hiking in cold weather – neither of which will work. And at any rate, it has to be white to adhere to our uniform.

"just to buy something I don't necessarily need."
If you don't need it, than don't buy it. Very simple.

that's a tough one! i usually hold out to see if any family members or friends have something similar before heading to a store, then i check the second hand shops (maybe there's an athletic one nearby?) and then i'd go to the fancy expensive place! if you need it to keep you warm, by ALL means it's necessary!!

Your shopping ban I guess is applicable only to the things that you don’t need at all. Just like your other commenter, every one of us must know the difference between wants and needs.
It sounds like you do need it hun. I would go ahead and buy it. That doesn't break your shopping ban either hun. :)

I would say it's a need. If you're not dressed properly for such things, you'll end up getting sick, losing time off work and you'll have to pay for medicine – so you'll probably end up spending more money than the cost of the shirt.
