It may seem like a lot, but it’s not that bad. We hadn’t bought groceries since September 17th, and we won’t need to buy anything (except fresh produce) next week either. Our goal is to have a big grocery shop every 2 weeks, and during the in between weeks, just buy produce. We’ve been doing it for a while, and it actually does bring down our overall grocery budget. We both really want to cut down on our meat intake, so hopefully we can chip away at the grocery budget in the coming months.
Also I do regret getting the pizza. It was going to be our treat for the weekend, since we weren’t going to have a big Thanksgiving dinner (we were planning on going hiking instead). But with the bad weather, and BF needed to go back to the island to do some work on his Jeep, we made a very last-minute decision to make the trip over. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner prepared by my mom. I’m glad that we went because we had a great time, but had we known, we definitely would have just made dinner at home instead.
As for my gas consumption, my current commute is about 75km round trip each day. It is torture. But my office is moving to a new location in a few weeks, which will reduce my commute by 20km round trip each day – or 100 km each week / 400 km each month – and that’s almost 1 tank of gas in savings. Plus, instead of a 2-3 hours round trip, I’ll be looking at 1.5 hours instead. :)

I don't envy your commuting times in Vancouver! I grew up in Toronto, which isn't much better, but now live in rural Ontario. My commute is 50 kms round trip and it takes me about 40 mins. I have considered taking a job that is basically 2 hours a day round trip, but I am not sure that I could keep that up on a consistent basis.
I don't think any specific city has worse commuting times. I live in Toronto and I get to work in 20m. A dude at my work gets there in 3m… etc.
If you want to live in the 'burbs, that's your own fault!
Very true. Cheaper housing costs out in the suburbs, but you definitely pay for it by having a longer commute. When we eventually buy a place, we will be looking somewhere closer into town.

Ugh 75km? Glad you're able to reduce your travel time. I commute about 20 minutes to work and I already cringe at that. I think when I sit in traffic, my soul slowly gets eaten away. If a car is moving fast through traffic, that's fine, but sitting in traffic is what drives me crazy.

Agreed. I miss living on the island, where my commute from the suburbs to downtown was less than 15 min. during rush hour. :) Oh well.
would you and your BF ever contemplate moving back to the island? It's a nice place to raise family, it seems.
A few years ago, I would have gladly moved back to the island … but now I have such a great job that I can see myself at for a long time, and with BF just starting out in his career (it would take him SO long to even transfer to the island since he's starting at the bottom of the ladder in seniority). I know that some day we'll move back, perhaps for the school system. I would much rather have my future kids in a smaller city to get their education. :)
