Well I FINALLY got my $101.99 refund from Blue Cross. My original claim got denied because the company I work for didn’t send in the proper paperwork for my health care. I ended up having to call in four times, and on the 4th call the customer service rep finally said I’d have to re-submit my claim. It was a pain in the butt, but at least I finally got my money.
In other money-related news, I’ve started putting some money every pay cheque into non-registered mutual funds (e-fund series from TD Canada Trust). Not that much for now – only $100/month – but I don’t want to invest more into mutual funds until my Emergency Fund is fully funded. Once I have more cash saved up, I’d like to look into Questrade as my next big financial move, but it’s kind of intimidating and scary. So far, the only kind of investing has been with mutual funds.
17 days until Hawaii!!! :) And speaking of Hawaii and my friend’s wedding, I am not going to be able to make it to my friend’s wedding shower, but am putting on the bachelorette party back on the island. So I need to figure out where to get my party supplies and also what we should wear for our night out on the town!

That Blue Cross thing happened to me too! I still haven't gotten back my $118 from Blue Cross yet for a claim I submitted twice!!!! It was for a contacts I ordered from Clearly Contacts. The first time, I sent in the packing slip (thinking it was the invoice), then it got rejected and I sent in the invoice and it got rejected as well. I ended up calling customer service 2 times (so far) asking why they were rejected and Blue Cross said I need to send in both packing slip and invoice TOGETHER! It doesn't make sense to me, since they have both receipts already in my file? Anyway, I have just sent what they asked for and hopefully I get my money back soon!

Don't be scared of Questrade! It's not too scary. You can start of with ETF's (like mutual funds but can be traded on the stock market). You just have to make sure you understand the lingo e.g. stop orders, stop losses, limits etc before you start investing. lol, I learned the hard way when I accidentally sold for a loss when I meant to set a limit for "in case" it went down to X amount. Whoops.

Oh yeah, I put in $200 into the TD eseries every month too for my RRSP. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it does add up and I love how the dividends just DRIP by themselves (such a beautiful thing it is! lol). Then I top it up with something else to max out my contribution (am thinking of a bond index this year).

Questrade is pretty painful to use. Multiple separate logins to do anything with your different accounts. Unless you're interested in making all kinds of small trades in individual stocks, I wouldn't bother.
I have thousands of dollars sitting idle in my accounts with them because I simply can't be bothered to go through my email to find the different account IDs that aren't saved in my browser and no doubt I'll have to phone them up during business hours to reset a password on one or more of them because I suspect my passwords are out of sync again.
I moved my accounts there since my main account's annual fee got spiked and I didn't have enough to get everything for free, plus cheaper trades, etc, but I think I'd be happier had I not. Fixed income is either non-existent or exceedingly difficult to trade in, as well.

Are you concerned about capital gains tax you would pay on an unregistered e-series account?
Not really. I don't plan on investing enough money in an unregistered account for capital gains tax to make much of an impact on me.
