Apparently I’m not getting those hiking boots for my birthday present after all. My mom has generously decided to buy me the Garmin Forerunner 405CX, my dream GPS fitness watch. MEC is selling them for $390 CDN + 12% HST, but I’ve found it on eBay for about $350 CDN after shipping.
I have never in my life received such an expensive gift from my parents for any reason, so I feel a little spoiled and guilty. I think my mom is being generous this year because she has paid off her mortgage, doesn’t have to save up for retirement, and has a lot of disposable income.
I’m really, really excited to have this watch. It means I can track all of my workouts – including running, hiking, bicycling, and also other fitness classes too. It’s much better than my old Nike+ Plus iPod system because Garmin is so versatile. I’m especially excited to get accurate readings on our hikes.
Getting this watch means I will have to pay for my own new hiking boots, which is fine. I have some $$$ in my Travel Fund that I could use if I wanted to, but I think I’m going to try and make some extra money to pay for them. That way I don’t dip into my savings or affect my monthly budget. I’m not in a big rush to get them, but I would really like them for the October long weekend hike we have planned.

How fun! We have a Garmin 305 and love it and use it constantly! We use sportstracks SW (free!) instead of the standard SW that came with it and find it much more versatile. Have fun with your new toy!

I got this watch as a gift too, and I use it for running. Great watch, the only problem I have with it is the battery life. It's supposed to be 8 hours but that's only if you have the GPS on the whole time… I run 4 or 5 days a week and because I usually have a day in between runs, and so I only get about 6 hours before i need to recharge it due to the battery drain while it's idle…

I think you need to check Costco… I'm pretty sure it was cheaper there.
I just checked Costco online and they're selling the 305 and 405, but I'm looking for the 405CX because the GPS apparently is much better. Also the 405 at Costco is about $350 and eBay it's $350 for the better model, and no HST.

Things always go on rebate at Costco. Look for those rebates you save an arm and a leg. With the warranty and return policy there you usually cant beat it. Also, when is the new blog coming out??????

Damn you, this watch is on my wish list! I find GPS City (In Alberta) has the best prices on all things GPS

Yah I'm super stoked for it. I'm specifically looking for the 405CX version because of the improved GPS capabilities over the 405, and on GPS City it's $399.95. I think MEC is selling it for $390 as well.

I hope that you have fun using your 405! I have been using one for the past two years now ans honestly couldn’t imagine running without it!
It really comes into its own when I race, as i can take splits at every km mark and it tells me both my current and average pace for each lap so that I know if I am on the right track or not.
There is a new 110 out as well which is slightly cheaper but doesn’t have half the functionality of the 405.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

I got the 305 earlier this year. The 405 is much cuter, but for an extra $250, I decided it wasn't worth it, even with the improved GPS and such. And it still isn't as small as it looks in the pictures online, which was surprising when i saw it in store.
Anyway, I really love tracking my runs, pace, and heart rate and everything. I also use sports tracks and like it! Have fun with it!

Yeah, there's no way I'd be getting the 405CX if it weren't for my mom buying it for me. If I were getting it, I'd get a different brand that's a bit cheaper but wouldn't have all the features the 405CX has. I tried it on in a store last week, and yeah, it's a lot bigger than it looks online. It looks gigantic on my thin wrists, but I guess it's just something I need to get used to!

Please post a review once you've had a chance to test it out. I was going to invest in the 305 but want to see if the 405cx is really worth the extra cost. It'd be interesting to see if you are able to take advantage of all the additional features

costco.ca has it on for $100.00 off from Nov. 15-28-online only though

Looking to buy this watch for my wife as she is an avid runner. I am a little concerned about the size of this though as she she found the 305 too big. Thanks in advance. Andrew from Vancouver, BC

I have been using the Forerunner 305 for the past five months and can’t imagine how I got along without it.
I primarily use the unit for my running, which has improved dramatically. This is because the unit allows me to easily monitor a wide variety of items on three screens that can be customized to each show four items.
