Shopping for orthotics

When we were at the PNE last weekend, we strolled through the market place and I saw a business selling custom made orthotics. I chatted with the owner for a while, and told him that I was looking for a good pair of orthotics to replace my 10+ yr. old custom made pair.

He showed me the kind that they make, and they are far superior to any ones I’ve ever seen. They’re flexible and look comfortable (leather foot bed!). And they make their orthotics through digitization, not through conventional casting. I actually had a pair done for me a couple of years ago, but they are so uncomfortable and they give me blisters! Anyway, this new company does lifetime repairs and replacement on their orthotics, which is a huge bonus for me because 1) orthotics are not covered under my extended health plan, and 2) I tend to be hard on my orthotics.

I did some research on the company. They’ve been around for about 11 years, and seem reputable. The orthodics are $400-450. Which are expensive, but it’s literally a once-in-a-lifetime expense since they do free repairs and replacements. It doesn’t hurt to book a free appointment, and with field hockey season fast approaching, I really need a good pair. So that’s next on my list to save up for!

That's awesome…my son needs orthotics about every 12 to 18 months (he has bilateral pronation-aka flat feet and walks on his tip toes, typical of autism) basically because he's a growing boy. My plan only covers them once every 3 years as they base it on adults I had to fork out the $450 last time and I talked to my plan administrator and they are going to take up the issue when they renegiotiate.

Hahahaha. I read your post title as shopping for others and then could not figure out what you were on about and how it related to shopping for others. I must go and get some sleep. LOL, that has amused me no end.

  5. Hey I am thinking about getting orthotics too, AND I saw that place at the PNE marketplace, lol. Maybe we were there at the same time?

Do you get it included in your benefits?

I do, and I'm planning to wait until i get 100% coverage (should kick in October or November as that's when I'll have $1000 paid out from my insurance company) to shop for some orthotics because then they'll be free! (I am so cheap that way I know.. don't judge! lol)

No, for some reason orthotics aren't covered under my medical plan – even though orthopedic shoes are? It's really weird. Anyway it doesn't matter when I buy them, because I won't be getting a refund from Blue Cross! :(

What did you think about the orthotics at the PNE? I thought they were really unique, and unlike most other orthotics places that make hard insoles from casting.

      • Really? The place I got my orthotics from (5 years ago) did the same thing- digital impression of the foot. I think they were called Foot Solutions. Maybe you can get those MBT shoes covered (I believe they are considered orthopedic shoes)- they look like they would be really good for the posture etc. (except they look kind of dorky because they're so raised off the ground). I might be thinking of getting a pair myself.

Hmm. When I got my first orthotics 10 years ago, they were made by foam impression. And then when I got my other pair done 2 years ago by my chiropractor's office, they were also foam impression. Interesting. I'm going to go for that consultation with that company and see what it's like. Also, I don't think orthopedic shoes would work for me because I need to be able to change out my orthotic into multiple different pairs of athletic shoes.

  7. are you not covered at work for orthodics? usually they are if you get a prescribed.

i get one orthodic and 2 pairs every calendar year for free.
and since orthodics are meant to be worn, they should be replaced annually.

That seems so odd that you can get a pair of orthopedic shoes, yet you can get orthotics.. crazy. Fortunately my plan does cover them – although I have yet to go and see if I should get a pair. Based on the wear of my shoes, I’m pretty sure a pair would do me some good…

Hello! I bought a pair of those orthotics… and they are terrific. Unfortunately, I had to pay for them outright as they're not covered by anything I have… but they've been fully worth it. The only problem… I'd like to get in touch with those people again, but I've lost the contact info and can't remember the name. I'd really appreciate it if anyone who remembers the name of those people to post it here. Thanks!

That stinks that your insurance doesn’t cover orthotics. I hope some of the leads you’ve been given here will give you a good deal on future ones!
