My new bicycle

This past weekend, BF and I went to go pick out my new bicycle. I did end up having to pay a bit extra because my bike cost more than $500 (it was $619.95) and I got fenders, a helmet and a lock. Final price to come after I get refunded from Scrap-It. I would suspect about $300?

I did try out a couple under $500, but the difference was so noticeable that I couldn’t justify buying the cheaper bike when I know I’m going to be riding it often and for long periods of time.

Anyway, I tried two types of bikes – a cruiser and a cross/hybrid. I really really liked the look and comfort of the cruiser, but it wasn’t practical for what I wanted out of a bike. So I ended up getting the Trek 7.2 FX. Which is similar to the kind of bike BF has. The bike in the picture is red, but mine is silver because they didn’t have any other colours in stock.

So around $300 for a brand new bicycle and all the accessories I need? That’s a pretty good deal. I did peruse Craigslist to see what I could get for under $300 (since with Scrap-It I could have gotten $300 in cash), and it wasn’t pretty. Plus I need a small bike, which limited my selection and I would have still had to buy all the accessories. All in all, I’m really happy with my purchase. The money for whatever Scrap-It doesn’t cover will come out of my Car Fund if I cannot make extra side income. It will NOT be coming out of my regular budget. That was the deal I made to myself when I decided to get the more expensive bike.

Wow the bike seems awesome. $300 for a bike like this with all accessories is a great deal I think.

  2. I'm glad to see that you opted for the bike you really wanted. You deserve it after doing the Scrap It program.

Getting the bike and all the accessories for $300 does sound like a good deal, good job.

I'm a casual biker (ie I ride less than an hour a week) with an inexpensive bike and have always been curious, what makes the $500+ bikes so much better?

Well I'm not an expert (by a long shot), but from what I know the more expensive bicycles have better more durable frames. Also the frames are lighter. I can pick up my entire bike with one hand, and I remember my old cheapo bike being SO heavy to lug around. Also the quality of the parts on the bike make a big difference in price. Plus I'm sure the name brands also play a factor into it.

But most importantly, it's the feel of the bike and the handling of it. I had a cheapo $150 bike before, and I tested out a few bikes around $400 over the weekend … and the difference is remarkable. I was surprised. But that being said, if it weren't for the Scrap-It program, I wouldn't have purchased a $600 bicycle on my own.

Hubby bought home a bike, a few weeks ago a Guy at work gave him it, and now it,s decorating our Garage. So bikes are a sore point with us just now.

old road bikes are actually quite usuable (although heavier than new ones, they are still lighter than cross bikes) and you can find a decent commuter bike for about $200, and maybe $50 in new tires or whatever it needs. But that doesn't sound like what you needed — just a general comment.

sounds like you found a great fit for you and got a great deal!
