Really? Ugh, I hope they don't start requiring them for back country camping up here. Although I don't really see how they can enforce it, because usually when we go hiking, we don't see anyone for days. And also 2.5 lbs?? That is a lot of weight to be lugging around!

A lot of the national parks and forests here have started requiring them for back country camping, no matter what! I guess the bears were getting quite aggressive in some areas, shaking trees or sending their cubs up trees to get food.

They are a pretty big pain though, and they add about 2.5 pounds empty! Boo. Plus I can barely get ours open myself!

Yes we have TONS of bears up here ... we don't use bear canisters. Sometimes in bigger hiking campsites they have food storage lockers. But there are usually enough people in those areas that bears stay away. If we are camping in the forest, we will just use rope and suspend our food between two trees, really high up. But usually we are camping in the alpine and bears don't really go that far up.
