This (long) weekend, BF and I are going hiking!!! It will take 3 full days of hiking (1 in, 1 to summit, 1 out). I’m extremely excited because it is my first attempt at a 9,000+ ft. mountain. The tallest mountain I’ve climbed to date is Grimface Mountain at 8,645 ft. So my fingers are crossed that I’ll be able to do this. :)
We are again going with dehydrated meal packages instead of carrying in heavy fresh food. Last night we took BF’s new Jeep for a spin over to MEC, where we picked up 4 meals, 2 pairs of socks (quality hiking socks are so ridiculously expensive) and a canister of fuel for $47.50. I paid for everything, and BF will buy the rest of the food for the trip – trail mix, fruit, sausage, cheese, rye bread, etc.
I’m hoping that it won’t be crowded where we’re going. When we hiked the Juan de Fuca trail, it was pretty busy and I definitely prefer isolation when we’re hiking.
Do you have any plans for the long weekend?

Do you have any recommendations for good quality but affordable hiking boots? Also, do you do any rock climbing?
The only hiking boots and climbing shoes I've ever had are La Sportiva, and I'm not sure I'd ever wear another brand. They're super comfy and have a wide range of products and prices. BF really loves La Sportiva as well.
My light hiking/every day shoes:
BOULDER X ($95 MSRP but I think I paid closer to $50)
My usual hiking boots:
THUNDER II GTX ($169 MSRP)
My super heavy duty mountaineering boots:
NEPAL EVO GTX ($535 MSRP – yes, super expensive)
My rock climbing shoes:
MYTHOS ($132 MSRP – but I paid around $75)

How are those dehydrated meals to eat? I've always been a little curious because I'd like to try hiking and camping but … food's so important! :)
My recent post Getting my YouKnowWhat together
A lot of them aren't that bad, actually. Not as good as fresh, real food. And definitely more expensive ($5-8 per meal). But the space and weight it saves makes it worth it. We're still experimenting with different types and brands to see what we like the best, but I already have a few favourites.

For the weekend one day we are going to have friends over. This is going to be potluck style as we practice what I shared last week on my post. Monday we are going to spend time outside. I love long walks. I would love to go hiking, but this weekend won't happen.
Looking forward for your update how your hiking went.
P.s Do you mind a link exchange?
I have some Asolo Goretex boots which I realy like.
A big big thing for me is to use liner socks. It helps prevent blisters so well (I was blisterless on a 10 day trek in Nepal- which was unfathomable for me before the liner socks).
Which mountain is this? Is it in the GVRD area?

Yes, I agree. I always always wear liner socks … I usually still get blisters (on my heels and my arch), but much less than if I didn't have liners on.
The mountain we were supposed to climb this past weekend is Mt. Sampson. It is north of Pemberton, south of Bralone. We ended up doing a day hike (rock climbing/scrambling I guess) up this waterfall in the Chehalis area. We had our packs on with the intention to stay overnight, but in the end we decided we had too much to do this weekend in the city. :( Especially because we'll be away this coming weekend at the wedding, and busy every weekend going into September.

I would also appreciate more info on the brands of dehydrated meals you like best. We always get the cheaper ones that come in a "serves 2" bag. Mountain House. They are mediocre, but edible hot calories. Do you guys have bears up there? Do you have to use bear canisters for all food?
I also went hiking this weekend!
Yes we have TONS of bears up here … we don't use bear canisters. Sometimes in bigger hiking campsites they have food storage lockers. But there are usually enough people in those areas that bears stay away. If we are camping in the forest, we will just use rope and suspend our food between two trees, really high up. But usually we are camping in the alpine and bears don't really go that far up.
A lot of the national parks and forests here have started requiring them for back country camping, no matter what! I guess the bears were getting quite aggressive in some areas, shaking trees or sending their cubs up trees to get food.
They are a pretty big pain though, and they add about 2.5 pounds empty! Boo. Plus I can barely get ours open myself!
Really? Ugh, I hope they don't start requiring them for back country camping up here. Although I don't really see how they can enforce it, because usually when we go hiking, we don't see anyone for days. And also 2.5 lbs?? That is a lot of weight to be lugging around!
