Over the past week, BF’s car (my old 1994 VW Golf) has been slowly dying. There are many things wrong with it. Because the repairs would cost about double what the car is actually worth, BF has found himself a used older model Jeep. He got a good deal, and says it’s in great condition and will last him for the next few years until I finish paying off my car loan – and then he’ll be able to buy something newer. That way we will still be able to easily afford a mortgage (our plan is to buy in 2 or 3 years).
That Golf really served us well, and we put a lot of KMs on her, driving her out to many different places to go hiking and camping. I thought she’d last longer than 15 months, but that’s the risk you take when you buy cheaper, older cars.
It will be nice to have a 4×4 vehicle, and it fits into BF’s active lifestyle. I personally wouldn’t have chosen a Jeep simply because it’s not the greatest on gas and it’s not that practical, but BF’s commute to school and most of his other activities is much less than mine and it’s his money so it’s his choice! :)
As for our old car? Because it will be very hard to sell a car that needs major repairs, we decided to go with the BC Scrap-It program, where I will be able to get a $500 credit towards a new bicycle (I doubt we’d get much more than that if we did end up selling the Golf on Craigslist or something). Since I don’t have a bike and he does, we both think that this is the best use of the Scrap-It program. The other option was $300 cash, which isn’t really worth it.
Has anyone else utilized the Scrap-It program before?

I'm not sure if we have something similar here in Las Vegas but I did sell my old Toyota Corrolla for 200 bucks to my mechanic so he could chop it up for parts. I used that to register my new car when I got it. :)

Well 15 months is a pretty short ride. But I had the same problem with my 96 Corolla and I ended up buying a new car. $500 credit towards a new bicycle sounds awesome! You would be able to get a really good bike. I used to drive cheapo bikes and it made me love my love for biking.

Man.. any idea how long this program has been around? I had an '88 Pontiac 6000 I simply sold for $40 as scrap. It would have been awesome to use it to obtain credit towards the bike I bought.

I'm not sure exactly how long it's been around for, but at least 4 or 5 years. My friend scrapped his car about 4 years ago and got a 1-year bus pass out of it. Which is a pretty sweet deal!
There are a bunch of requirements on the Scrap-It website, but one says that you must be able to drive your car to a Scrap-It location. You can't tow or push it there. So it at least has to be in some sort of working condition.
Oh.. it would have gotten there, but probably just barely. By the end of its life, it sounded like a motorcycle. ;)

My sister (in California) just scrapped her car for $1,000 and was thrilled with being able to get rid of her car. I love these programs! You should be able to get a great bike with that cash.
My recent post To Buy List
I bought myself a little old Corolla about 33 months ago she is red and was born in 1991 I paid cash for her it,s the first time I have ever bought a cheapie car and the first time I have ever paid cash for a car. So far in that 33 months I have replaced the tyres ( which you would expect ) replaced the battery ( which you would expect ) and replaced a leaking hose, and that,s it. Maybe I was just really lucky, as my husband was annoyed at my choice, he thought I would get less than 15 months out of her, but boy was he wrong. By the way I call her BETTY
