Maid of Honour July 21, 2010

Posted by gmbmfb in : saving money, spending , trackback

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it yet or not, but when I was in Seattle, my friend asked me if I would be the Maid of Honour for her wedding in Hawaii. Of course I said yes, and we proceeded to look at dresses I could wear to the wedding. We checked online, as well as shopped for hours in downtown Seattle. In the end, she really liked the J.Crew Taryn dress in Spiced Wine. She didn’t offer to pay for it (and I didn’t really expect her to), so at a price of $215 US + shipping + alterations, I was really apprehensive.

Then I got a fabulous idea – eBay! I did one simple search, and ended up finding the dress (brand new with tags) in the size and colour I want! It was Buy It Now at $149.99 or Best Offer … so I submitted my offer of $115, and a few minutes later, it was accepted!

My budget for this month is cringing, but $115 is a heck of a lot better than $215!!! My fingers are crossed it will need little to no alterations (I’m usually a 4 petite, but bought a 6 petite because of the sizing chart, and reviews online were saying that the dress fit a bit more snug than normal because of the interior corset).

Good buy! I didn't even think of that when buying bridesmaid dresses. If I'm ever in a wedding again I'll have to remember this tip. :)

I've been in a couple of weddings and the dress is not the only cost. There are shoes. Then manicure/pedicure. Hair/makeup. And let's not forget the bridal shower and bachelorette party.

It's expensive being in a wedding!

I love the dress it,s so feminine and flattering. I always try Ebay before I buy elsewhere, you can save a small fortune if they have what you are looking for, a $100.00 saved excellent.

But wait, doesn't the bride choose the Maid of Honour and Bridesmaid's dresses?

The dress is lovely, will you wear it again afterwards? Is it normal for you to have to buy your own dress?; I ask because over here in the UK it would be paid for by the wedding party.

That's awesome. I usually scour the internet for dresses and shoes if the in-store price is ridiculous, but I never think to go ebay. This is a good tip for me.

The dress looks fabulous though.

Yes, I'll be able to wear it to 2 weddings this year, as well as my company Christmas party. I don't have many fancy dresses, so I'm sure I'll get good use out of it.

I think it's normal for the bride/groom to pay for the dresses, but not everybody is conventional. I was a bridesmaid a few years ago, and she paid for the dress but I paid for the alterations (which were about $150!!).

I'm the only one in the wedding party, and we made sure that we both agreed on my dress before I bought it. :)

Oh, I know. It's ridiculous! I'm already spending over $1000 to go to her wedding, because it's in Hawaii. But I know she'd do the same for me … hopefully I'll be able to just find a pair of beach flip flops, nix the manicure/pedicure, do my own make-up, and just get my hair done with her.

I've never heard of the bride/groom paying for the MOH or the bride maids dresses.

Oh, that dress is amazing. It would look terrible on me, I have nowhere to wear it, and I can't afford it… and yet I want it anyway! You and your friend have excellent taste. If it's any consolation, at least it's a dress you won't be embarrassed to wear to parties etc afterward, like some bridesmaids' dresses?
