After humming and hawing for a few months, I finally decided to get rid of my 6pm early evenings calling option on my iPhone (cost was $7/month!). Last month I only used my phone for 49 minutes total for the ENTIRE MONTH, and the month before was only 53 minutes. BF and I usually text or make really quick calls to each other, and any time I need to make a call during the daytime, I just use my office phone.
In case you’re curious, here’s how my iPhone plan with Rogers breaks down:
$17.50/month
200 anytime minutes
Unlimited evenings/weekends starting at 9pm
$30/month iPhone Data Pack
Call Display
Visual Voicemail
Unlimited sent/rcvd text/picture/video msgs
500MB data plan (have never gone over 300MB usage)
I wish I was paying under $50/month after tax/fees, so perhaps that’s something I can discuss once my contract is up for renewal again. But for now, I’m happy with what I’m paying. And to be honest, my iPhone has come in handy way more than I ever thought it would. Plus, my monthly cell phone bill is only $15/month more than what I was paying before, and is less than BF’s (he’s with Bell), and he doesn’t even have a data plan.
I was also surprised to see that on average, I send about 350 text messages/month. Funny how much I text now that I have an unlimited plan. Before, I only had 30 text messages/month, and I always kept within that.
And lastly, I’m very happy with the Rogers iPhone app. I can quickly look to see how many minutes and how much data I have left to use in my billing cycle. If you’re with Rogers and you don’t have this app yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?
Anyway, the point of this post was to say that I’ve saved $7/month off my Rogers bill, so I’ll shut up about my iPhone now. :)

That's great you've been able to trim the cell phone bill down. I know some people that are always using their phones and end up with bills for $200 plus. My wife and I recently renewed our contract with Telus, we were paying $90/month for two phones and that was not with unlimited texting. We got two new phones and new plans bringing our monthly bill to $65/month. A whopping $25/month savings.
I still wish i had an iphone though.

I’ve been nagging BF to leave Bell and come over to Rogers so that we can be on a shared plan as well. It’s just so much cheaper. But he’s locked into a 3 year contract.

ugh my phone costs that much and it's not an iPhone =( I tried to get it lowered, but changing your plan requires a contract renewal!! I want to get the new iPhone when my contract is done so I'm just going to suffer until then.

Changing your rate plan should only cost money if you want to add on promotional items. Otherwise, a straight across rate plan change shouldn't affect your contract. At least it shouldn't. I had 1 year left in my contract and was able to renew with the promotional iPhone price.

My $17.50 plan includes early evening calling after 6pm. You don't have to pay the system access fee of 6.95 and 911 system access fee of 0.75?
My old $17.50 plan also had 6pm early evenings, however it wasn't compatible with the iPhone and a data plan, so I had to switch off of it (which I was very reluctant to do). But I guess it doesn't matter anyway, since I still have unlimited evenings/weekends at 9pm, and I barely even use 25% of my 200 anytime minutes every month.
Also, no I don't pay the SAF or the 911 fee. New customers don't pay it either, and when I was renegotiating my contract, they were able to take it off for me.

I completely understand about the iPhone love. If I culd write it a love song, I really would. Even though I've had it only a week, I am so happy with it. I want to call it my precious and put it on a display. :)

wow, I have a blackberry and I have almost the same plan as you, but I still pay the access fee and the 911 fee. I wonder if talking to them would get it removed from my plan. I've been with rogers for almost 10 years.
I think if you raise enough of a fuss, they will. I've been with Rogers for only 4 or 5 years, and complained on Twitter and my blog about not getting a good enough plan, and some Rogers social media rep read what I wrote and referred me to someone who helped me get exactly what I wanted.

That's pretty good! $55 for a phone and data plan??
I know that Telus has this thing where they won't add the data plan (for unlimited data or whatnot) unless you have a voice plan that is more than $20 or $25 or something. I have the $17.50 EPPplan too…
I'm waiting until the iphone 4 comes, then i'm gonna pounce on Telus lol!

I tried to negotiate with Telus when I was getting the iPhone. I told them what Rogers was offering me, and they seriously just refused to budge. I called into their customer care centre three times, and every time they were at least $10/month more than Rogers. So boo to them.

But then you're a customer of Rogers already right? =) The TELCO companies give you better deals if you are a loyal customer. You usually can't get the good retention deals until you've been a customer of theirs for at least a number of years.
That being said, I do hear that Rogers has better retention deals than Telus!

They charge the $2.50 GAF fee now instead of the SAF… but I found they try and trick you by making the voice plan or other features more expensive.
