Officially booked for Maui

So our trip to Hawaii is officially booked (!!!).

Here’s what we paid total:

$1,454.25 round trip flights + rental car
$645 accommodation (5 nights)
- $500 Amex travel credit

TOTAL = $1599.25 ($799.63 each)

We will save money on food because we rented a condo with a full kitchen. We’ve decided to buy groceries (there is a local farmer’s market right by our condo) and make our own breakfast, lunch & snacks. Two of the dinners are already accounted for (pre-wedding BBQ and reception dinner), and we plan on going out to dinner for the other 3 days.

As for entertainment, I think when we’re not just lazing around the beach, we’ll be doing a lot of walking and exploring since we rented a car. I’d like to check out the markets, as well as bring my hiking boots because I hear there are a lot of great trails on Maui.

My Travel Fund is completely drained now, and I also had to use this month’s side business income to cover the rest of the cost. But I’m pleased that it’s all paid for in cash.

My original budget for Hawaii was $1,200 each, which was to include flight, hotel, car rental & spending money. Right now we’re at $800 each, so I think we will easily meet this budget.

make sure you budget a little bit extra for groceries. food on the island can be a tad expensive. enjoy your trip! i'm so jealous. I love Hawaii, and look to make it my destination wedding location as well =)

Yeah I know a few people that own condos on the island, and they say that it’s ridiculously priced. But they told me to keep to the local markets. At least then the groceries will be fresh and somewhat reasonable for the area.

They don't check. So you can go to the pools on the other resorts and relax on their chairs, too. Food is so expensive if it's right by the beach but the farer away, it's cheaper. Of course they got regular stuff like McDonalds. Be sure to drive on the Road to Hana; very nice rainforest and it's free. Pack a lunch. There are some nice waterfall pools to swim along the way too.
Also, take a drive to the peak of the national park. I think it was $10/car. You can walk the sunset. It's very cold up there like 30 degree.
    enjoy your trip

We use to go to Kihei every year as kids, so beautiful. I'm so jealous. You'll have to tell me what company you booked your condos thru, sounds like you got a great deal!!

Try and check out the trails at the "seven sacred pools" just past Hana. You walk under wild mango trees, beside a gorgeous river where you can do some waterfall swimming and end up in a bamboo forest that is unreal. When the wind blows the bamboo knocks together and sounds like wind chimes!!! Also don't forget the little town Paia (it reminded me of Tofino) for some of the most amazing eats, and cheap too if you hit up the salad bar at the all organic, natural grocery store – mana foods! Enjoy your trip, Hawaii is amazing!!!

p.s. don't forget to try the shave ice if you have a sweet tooth!

You need to eat at Pa'ia Fish Market, if possible. http://www.paiafishmarket.com/ Have a great time.

That's so awesome and I am so excited for you! It's really cool you're near a farmer's market. I love fresh food on vacation. Don't forget lots of sunscreen!

How exactly do the Amex points work? Do the points come off automatically when you purchase something travel-related? Do you pay for the trip first and they credit you later or do you always see your points and can use them right away?

    • gmbmfb009 says:

The points just accumulate. I can log into my Amex account and see them whenever I want.

I earn them at a rate of 1.25 points per $1 spent.
You have to redeem in 5,000 point increments. 5,000 points = $50 credit
This is for the Amex Blue Sky credit card, and you get 12,000 free points if you spend at least $3000 on your card in the first 6 months.

There are no blackout dates or restrictions either, so you can spend the points on anything travel-related.

Basically when you want to cash in, you just call them up and ask them to apply however many points to your account. You can apply the points to any travel purchase up to 12 months after the transaction has happened. So tons of room for flexibility.
