Shaw Cable student discount June 17, 2010

So Shaw Cable has a student discount, and now that BF is a student, we’re going to try to get it. I say ‘try’ because in order to get the discount, you’re supposed to show a valid student ID and course schedule – which he doesn’t have because the institution is stand-alone and only offers the program that he’s taking.

I talked with a customer service rep on the phone, and he advised me to go to a Shaw Cable centre and bring all documentation with us – receipt, acceptance letter, etc. And they would most likely be able to do that for us there.

Right now, we’re paying  $98 for digital cable (Tier 2) & high speed internet. It’s more expensive in Vancouver than other places. My mom pays about $20/month less than us.

$98/month is a lot, and now that BF is in school, that bill will fall on my shoulders. The Shaw student discount is a whopping 50% less than what we’re paying, so it’s a huge deal. Plus, the discount is good for 12 months, which will take us all the way to the end of BF’s program.

My fingers are crossed that they’ll accept BF’s paperwork even though it’s a bit out of the ordinary. It’s kind of a pain to have to go down to a Shaw centre, but it will be worth it if we get the discount. :)

And if for some reason we get denied the discount (which I don’t see happening), I’ll drop us down to basic cable. Which I think saves $30/month.

We were able to get this with Jordan's program in Calgary and he didn't have a student id card. He had some letter and that seemed to work. they were super flexible.

good luck!

It's amazing what you can accomplish if you get on the phone with your utility provider and see how to get the best deal; particularly if you haven't checked in for a couple of years. Good luck with the discount! Emma @ Tightwad

I just did this for my cable too! What a great deal. And, they offered me a really great student discount for internet but I declined it as I am already with Telus….so I called Telus and let them know what price Shaw was offering me and they matched it. It never hurts to ask!

Cable is always a pain! I wasted so much money my first two years of college. I think after I come back from Germany, I just won't get any until I am out of college. I won't need it in the most likely cramped studio I'll find in SF anyway, I should focus more on getting out of college! Hassle. Hassle. Hassle.

Student discount shouldn't be a problem, but just in case it is, you can also do the same thing as with the cells, where you find a half decent offer by a competitor (ie, Telus) and call up to ask Shaw whether they can match it or if you should take the offer, get escalated to retentions and see what you can get.

I had a year of Shaw high speed at 20/mo just end a couple months ago, so I'll pay full rate for a couple more then go fishing for another discount.

Sweet. I'm going to cancel my gym membership and use my school's. As well as switch to a student TTC pass come September. I love student deals!

definitely upset by this. a friend mentioned this to me a couple months ago. i have been using shaw since last may, and they totally don't let you know about this. i am a fulltime student (even in the spring./summer) and live right by the university. i have had nothing but problems with shaw here in thunder bay.
arghh!

Yeah, they really don't advertise that they have a student discount, eh? We didn't know about it either until someone mentioned it to us!
