So I’ve been searching for the perfect place to stay in Maui for my friend’s wedding, and I think I’ve found it. There are 2 ground floor units in the same condo unit that I’m interested in. Both have the same views, same layout, etc. One is charging $139/night, and the other is $170/night + $125 cleaning fee. I e-mailed both of them to ask some basic questions, and I also asked the more expensive condo if they would consider lowering their price to match the cheaper unit.
I haven’t heard back from the $170/night place, but the cheaper place e-mailed me back right away and offered to lower their price even further to $129/night. I love when I get a cheaper rate without even asking! :)
There are cheaper condo units available (we wanted to do a condo unit because they have full kitchens so we can cook our own meals when we want to), but we wanted something oceanfront & ground floor for direct beach access. The condo unit we’re looking at is ranked #1 in the region on Trip Advisor, offers free parking (we’re renting a car), and is 20 ft. from the ocean. So all in all, it’s a pretty good deal.
Now I’ll just wait to hear from the more expensive condo unit, and figure out flights. I’ve found them as cheap as $500/person leaving out of Vancouver.
***EDIT***
I just heard back from the more expensive condo unit, and they’re willing to offer $135/night ($5 more than the cheap unit/night), but they won’t budget on the cleaning fee. I will definitely book the cheaper unit because of that.

Hi, I hope the TripAdvisor ranking didn't affect your decision too much! The reason I say this is because TripAdvisor has the same problems as Yelp with fake reviews from owners, employees and PR people.
Of course, not all rankings are compromised, but there's been enough coverage about it in the travel media for smart consumers to be wary.
I wrote about it on my travel blog if you'd like to read more. It's called The Jaded Tourist…(yes, I think I'm jaded! Must be getting old…)

I usually just use Trip Advisor is a resource to make sure the place isn’t too scummy. I checked out a lot of reviews on the internet of the condo unit, and everyone seems to think that it’s a really good value for the money paid. So I’m happy. Don’t need anything fancy, since I’m sure we’ll spend most of our time on the beach. :)

After getting a super-sketchy hotel in a rather popular destination, I use TripAdvisor as my first line of defence. If it's not on TripAdvisor AT ALL (which said hotel wasn't), then it's a no-go. But I take the actual reviews with a grain of salt.
Another way to check for reputable hotels is to cross-check with Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotels.com and other sites. If it's listed on multiple sites, then at least it's a legitimate business. Some smaller hotels on TripAdvisor are listed by the owners themselves, so it doesn't mean much if it's on there. For example, Hotel Toshi in NYC is listed on TripAdvisor, and it's not a legitimate hotel and has a lot of fake reviews.
You can read into the situation with Hotel Toshi here: http://www.elliott.org/blog/did-yet-another-fake-…
I would definately book the cheaper one too just because of the cleaning fee. And how exciting, right on the ocean!
My recent post Everyday I'm Hustlin….
What site are you using to search for the places to rent out of curiousity?
I’m just using VRBO. I know a few people who have rental properties that they advertise for on that site, and it’s a pretty good resource!

Thanks!! My friends and I are thinking of vacationing next year. I'd love it if we could rent a place instead of a hotel.
