Las Vegas team building activity?

Help! I need your ideas.

I have been put in charge of booking some sort of fun “team building” activity while we’re in Las Vegas next month. There will be about 10 people from my company coming down – all various ages and fitness levels. Budget is flexible, but nothing ridiculously overpriced.

We will have about 2-3 hours to do this activity, and it will be scorching hot outside (mid-July, afternoon). So nothing really outdoorsy – like a hike.

It has to allow for conversation – so no shows – unless it’s something totally cool and interactive – but it also has to be in the afternoon, so that’s a bit hard. No restaurants or bars either, as we’ll be doing those things too while we’re there. We want something fun and unique.

So far, my ideas were: gun range, helicopter tour, sky diving, indoor rock climbing (maybe not), hot air balloon ride, zip lining … but after that, I’m kind of stumped … and I’m hoping that you readers out there might know of something that could fit what I’m looking for!

Treasure Hunt advendture, cooking class, Improv class

  2. I second the Treasure Hunt (or scavenger hunt) idea.

Indoor skydiving. It doesn't have the view, but it doesn't have the "I'm going to die today" thing either for those people on your team that may be afraid of heights. My boyfriend brought me to a place here in NH for my birthday, and it was really fun.

We recently had a team building day at my work (here in Australia) and we went hot air ballooning which was fab, but you might want to check that one out – here they only do it at dawn, due to wind etc, and you are looking to go in the arvo? Another one we did years back was an afternoon of beauty treatments (therapists came to our hotel), wine and nibbles – yes, even the guys joined in!

My husband and I went ATV'ing in the desert and it was very cool. There were a half dozen men who were also in the group who all worked at the same company and obviously doing a team buliding exercise. Might be too hot in July though – we were there in Feb. and it was coolish. And it takes about 5 hours.

Ziplining and rock climbing aren't things that appeal to a broad group in my mind. I'd participate, but those are the sort of things that if you aren't into it, you're stuck bored/frustrated and sitting by yourself all afternoon. The gun range or the balloon ride are better. Personally I'd plan something safer/tamer – a baseball game or something – but I guess it depends on the crowd.

The indoor skydiving sounds fun. I've always wanted to try that. And it seems like it would get your heart pumping a bit so the co-workers have something to talk about/be afraid about together. Hot air ballooning would force everyone to talk – which is good. How about the old 'fall from a table into everyone's arms' games; the "trust" games. Haahah we've come a long way from those.

I was going to suggest indoor skydiving, too. They can accommodate groups as well. http://flyawayindoorskydiving.com/pf.html

    helicopter tour!
Not sure if a cooking class or something is appealing and available. Improv class sounds like a blast.

How many people could you convince to go skydiving? That would be pretty cool although I don't know how much "teamwork" would be involved in that. (I would think that a teambuilding activity would require something where people work together to accomplish a task). Zip lining would be a great idea. When I went Zip lining in Costa Rica, there were several courses where we had to go in pairs.

  11. The helicopter tours are usually pretty noisy (and you'll likely wear noise-muffling headphones), so they wouldn't allow for much conversation during it.

If you're looking for some very neat team building exercises, check out this youtube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4GUZspslY0
Excellent for icebreakers and such. Good Luck

Yes, hot air ballooning is a crack of dawn activity that is also very slow, so likely not suitable for your timeline. Circus stuff could be a lot of fun, and you could look at something like tumbling or juggling with a partner so it would be team building. When you say gun range, do you mean just firing at targets? I personally like that, but something like paintball or laser tag is more of a team building activity. And I love playing with sharp, pointy objects (i.e. swords) but you can do that here in Vancouver. Better to do something you can't or wouldn't do here. What about something with magic?

I think a scavenger hunt or some version of an amazing race would be good if people are coming from out of town. They’d get to explore Las Vegas during the activity while working together on the clues. And if you want to make it unique, you can do a video or photo scavenger hunt, where you take footage of your team at various places, or create it around a theme which suits your group. eg – Into high tech? – do a GPS hunt. Some companies even offer limousine scavenger hunts where you go from one location to another in style!

I’m putting together a website to help people with just your type of question, but it’s only a few weeks old so only has a limited list of activity ideas so far. There are some great ideas in the comments above that I’m going to include in my list. Thanks everyone!

  17. How about calling on a spirit (or pretending to do that)? The hand holding and sitting in a closely knit circle would do well to infuse an elevated team spirit
