Happy birthday to BF! - Give Me Back My Five Bucks

Happy birthday to BF!

Even though BF’s birthday is today, I gave him his present yesterday since it arrived in the mail. He has been wanting a solar charger – so he can keep his various electronic devices powered for longer hiking trips. So I got him one from MEC. I read a bunch of reviews online, and they all seemed to be positive. Plus, the charger is SUPER light and you can strap it to a backpack so that it can charge while you hike.

Tonight we’re going to dinner and a movie. :)

For dinner last night he made burgers. I decided to try something new and skipped the bun (180 calories just for a bun!). I just put some dijon mustard, ketchup and a little avocado on top of the burger patty and ate it with a fork. I’ve always thought about doing that, but didn’t think I could handle a bunless burger. Turns out I can, and I think I might even like it. Hmm.

In travel news, my business trip to Las Vegas is officially booked. I’ll be there for 5 days/4 nights in July and am super excited. Although, not excited for the weather. The other 2 times I’ve been to Vegas, it’s been in the winter. And even then, it was t-shirt weather. I don’t know how I’m going to survive in the heat of the summer. I’m not sure what my work schedule is like, but Serendipity and I are going to try to meet up for a cocktail or two. :)

Also, I’ve been trying really hard to book my f light to Toronto, but I simply cannot fathom paying $650 for round trip airfare – and that’s with a seat sale! I just won’t do it (I don’t think). I’ll keep my eye out on prices, and hope that they start to fall closer to the date that I want to travel (end of July). I might have to book everything last-minute to get a good deal. Which should be okay, since I won’t have to book any time off work to go – maybe skip out on the Friday a few hours early, but that’s it.  I was originally hoping to do the entire trip for around $900 – flight, accommodation & spending money. And clearly that’s not going to happen. So if I can’t keep the entire trip to around $1200, I’ll really have to see if it’s a smart move to go or not.

Oh, and does anyone watch Deadliest Catch? BF and I are addicted to the show now.

  1. I went gluten free this year and so I eat bun-less burgers, and love it! Although people tend to give me funny looks :-)

  2. Happy Birthday GMBMFB BF :) And yes we are avid Deadliest Catch fans I work with Mike's wife actually so that is probably partly why since we like to see what antics he is up to every week. I hope you have a great time at the Mariner's game.. So far Weather is supposed to be nice in Seatlle (finally one day at least)..

  3. If you are going to rent a car and don't mind driving, could I suggest that you fly to Hamilton? There's a direct flight from Westjet from Vancouver to Hamilton. And then from Hamilton it's only about an hour drive to Toronto downtown. I think tickets might be cheaper, too.

  4. Happy birthday to your BF!

I too like Deadliest Catch and also Ice Road Truckers!!!

  5. I booked a flight for myself and my fiance to toronto a month or so ago for $800 round trip for both of us. I would definately wait it out, I am sure you can get it cheap like we did.

    • Ohh good to know. Yeah I'm thinking I'll have to wait until maybe mid July to book my flight. BF just got a travel e-mail saying that flights Van-TO were only $400, departing next week. So I'll keep my fingers crossed!

  6. What about Virgin America from Seattle to Toronto? It might be somewhat cheaper… and you can park at one of the park and rides and bus/light rail to the airport.

    • I'll have to check that out! Because I'm really tight on time, driving to Seattle (or even taking a bus there) might not be an option. It'll take at least 3 hours to get there from where I work, not including any waiting at the border.

  7. Looks like you found bf the perfect gift, and it reminds me that hubbies bdy is in 4 weeks and I did,nt budget for it Grrrrr

  8. Sometimes a meal never feels complete without the carbs for me. =(

What about open-faced burgers or using bun thins to save on the calories? You can still have the bun (or half) and not have to feel as guilty!

  9. try checking WestJet and other airlines on sunday night, after midnight (so technically monday morning) apparently they post seat sales between 1-4am…! flights to Vancouver from Toronto were less than $600 during the olympics, so it shouldn't be more expensive than that!
    My recent post top bun.

  10. buns are for suckers. agree.

  14. Also try Seattle to Buffalo… There’s a bus route run by Megabus that goes between the Buffalo airport and downtown Toronto. The times might not be convenient, and it would add an extra 2 hours to the trip, but if you can get everything to work, it’s super cheap (random check found a return fare of $14 Cdn).
