10km running goal in sight

Fitness-wise I’ve been keeping up with my workouts. I’ve got to ramp it up though. I want to be able to run a 10km in <50 min. with ease by the fall. I can run a full 10km now, but it would probably be closer to 58 min. Right now I’m running 5km in about 26-27 min (it’s not going all-out, but at a comfortable pace – probably about 75% effort), and am slowly increasing my running time. I prefer the treadmill right now because I can monitor my speed and distance precisely, and every run has been interval training (fartleks). In fact, almost all the cardio I do is in the fartlek method because that’s how I’ve been trained for as long as I can remember. Although, sometimes it’s nice just to stretch out in a nicely paced, even run.

I think I’m going to sign up for a 3 or 6 month pass to the gym once I finish off my current 10x punch card. Over the last 2 months I’ve tested how often I use the gym, and I’m going more than 10x/month so it makes more financial sense to buy a pass instead of the 10x punch card. Getting the membership means I have access to the gym, pool and all drop-in fitness classes. Which is great, because I’d like to try boot camp and spinning just to mix things up a bit. And I know I can afford a gym membership because I didn’t renew my rock climbing membership OR my ski pass. :(

Oh, and remember that fitness buddy I thought I had? Well she has bailed the last 3 times we planned to work out, so I told her that I go often, and am always available to go whenever she wants to.  I’ve put myself out there to motivate her, but she needs to find the motivation inside of her to take the first step. Until then? I’m on my own I guess.

I remember running my first 10k in 59 minutes, I was elated that I had managed to do it in under an hour. It,s addictive don,t you think ???

You seem to have lots of motivation, and that's a big plus. It does get easier (well, with the odd hiccup), but the benefits are worth it.

Haha! I can totally relate with the fitness buddy thing. Except that I'm the fitness buddy who bails out. Now, I'm so shy.
