Hawaii is expensive!

So I was pricing out how much it’s going to cost to go to Maui in late September. We’ll probably be going for 5 nights (we’d like to go for an entire week, but I don’t think I can swing it since my vacation days were pro-rated to my April start date). At first, I was looking at flights (which cost about $800/per person round-trip – ouch). That’s pretty freaking expensive. But then I checked out some hotel/flight packages and we can stay at a fabulous beachfront hotel (with an oceanfront room) and a rental car for our entire stay for only $1,075/per person. Plus food & other miscellaneous, of course.

My friends who own a condo in Hawaii are going to see what kind of rate they can rent to me for. But even then, can it really beat $2,150? Flights would be $1,600 minimum for the both of us. Then we would have to get our hotel and a rental car for around $550. My friend who’s getting married is reserving a block of hotel rooms at a resort for $150/night for her guests – which is too expensive for us.

So we’ll see. I’m hoping that rates will go down in the next few months. Plus I have about a $500 travel credit to use on my Amex. So if we could end up going for $1,650 for the both of us (which includes flight, hotel + rental car), that would be a pretty good deal I think.

you're lucky to be flying out of Vancouver… getting to Hawaii from Toronto seems like an impossibly $$$ feat!

Keep an eye out for seat sales, my husband, daughter and I flew there last September for $209 p.p. each way with Air Canada leaving from Vancouver:)

Have you checked out any travel agencies? I booked my flight ticket to Asia through one after searching everywhere online for months (to compare prices) and I ended up getting the best deal at the agency.

Try going out of SeaTac or even Portland. Alaska just added new flights direct to several places in Maui an have special fairs through November. If you can get to SeaTac, I just picked random dates in September and you can get round trip tickets for $415 (the cheapest). Use the low fare calendar on Alaska and it will tell you the cheapest days to fly. (Monday – Thursday) If you can get to Seattle for not to much, it would cut your airfare tickets in half.

Well, Portland is a little far away for us, and Seattle really is pushing it in terms of distance. It's too expensive to pay for parking there, and the shuttle buses are super slow and not that great. Plus, I'm not even sure how we'd get from the shuttle bus stop in downtown Vancouver to where we live.

ANYWAY :) we might try Bellingham, which is pretty much as far as we're willing to travel to get to an airport, and that's already almost 2 hours away from where we live without any border line-up.
