Education Opportunities April 23, 2010
Posted by gmbmfb in : education, job , trackbackAnother fantastic benefit of my new job is that they offer further education/training opportunities, in which they financially support 100% as long as it fits within my career path. There is a Marketing Management Certificate program I’d love to take through distance education, and the only thing that has been stopping me is money. I didn’t want to take out student loans again! AND I also wanted to keep on working full-time. So my plan was to eventually save up that money.
But now that there is the chance that I could get the program 100% paid for by my employer? That would be amazing. I’m not going to bring it up until after my probation period is over, but I think that it would be really cool if it were approved (the pre-requisites are that it has to be within my career path and help me advance my career, or give me certification needed for my job – oh and the time commitment has to be OK’d by everyone – which shouldn’t be a problem since it would be distance education). I could take a few classes at a time and in a couple of years I’d have a Management Certificate to my name, which would make me a more attractive candidate when I want to take that next step in my career.
I’ve e-mailed the program coordinator at the school to get a bit more information. Even if this program doesn’t get approved by my job or if they are only able to give me partial funding, I’m still going to do it eventually. I think that for my career objectives, this certificate program is more advantageous and more applicable to me than quitting my job and going back to school for my 4-year degree.

I get the education benefit too. It's $5,250 per year- amazing! defintely take advantage of it-it's a benefit.
Also, by us-the program is handled by a 3rd party…which is really great because they are very well informed.
That sounds like a great opportunity!

That is so neat! It would be such a great benefit for work to pay for that education. Do they have requirements about staying for a certain period following the training?
This is a great benefit — I did school while working and it is a huge time commitment, but very much worth it. I hope it is approved for you!

It doesn't say anything about staying for any length of time following training … but most places do have some sort of agreement regarding that. I'll ask about it in a few months when I've figured out exactly what program I want to do and if it gets approved by the higher ups. :)
What a great thing. Too bad more companies did not do this. It would really encourage their members to keep up to date. I wish teacher's had this program. We have free PD days but any additional qualification courses or other courses that would be helpful to have in the classroom are not paid for :( Hope it gets approved for you!
That's the spirit. I'm so happy for you with that plan. I admire you're determination. :) I hope they approve it though. :)
My company requires you to stay for 3 years after completing the training for the cost to be waived. This is only applicable to degree and certificate programs. If you leave at say 1.5 years you would owe 50% of the cost so they pro-rate it.
There are no requirements on normal training such as seminars, etc.
Oooh hoping it's approved! Sadly, I no longer have a decent education benefit – my employer contracts with a company that provides distance learning but the classes that I've already run through are pretty crappy. I don't even think they're adequate for my staff (who are mainly entry level and don't need highly rigorous training yet) now, I'll have to find better education tools for them as they progress and grow.
