How to fit in fitness

I get up at 5:30am to get to work on time, and I’m not home until 6. And when I get home, I am in no mood to exercise. I am tired and cranky from the commute, and all I want to do is make dinner and hang out with BF.

So when do I have time to work out? I’m thinking of getting up at 5am and doing a 30 Day Shred session (20 min.) or going to the gym after work. There’s a rec centre across the street from my office … But while that seems convenient, it seems like such a huge effort.

What I’m thinking of doing is the 30 Day Shred in the mornings 2x/week and then the gym once a week after work. That means 3 workouts during the work week and then at least 1 workout on the weekend. 4-5 days of exercise seems adequate doesn’t it?

That could work – I struggle with the same thing and there is a gym in my building…..but it's the last thing I want to do after work – and I don't want to get all sweaty before going upstairs. and I just really love my sleep in the morning.

I think that could work. I struggle to get workouts in too. Like Jessie, I love my sleep in the morning, getting up and doing the shred is such an effort. I try and do some cardio every day, but go to the gym 3 times a week.

I wouldn't worry too much about not working out as much the first couple of weeks of the new job–there is definitely a huge adjustment period to a new job and commute and everything. Once you get used to it, it'll be much easier to find time to exercise and not be exhausted every single day when you get home.

I find morning workouts are best for me. I can't get up for it after work. Could you go to the rec centre before work? You might even miss some of the traffic that way-just a thought.

Would going to the gym after work make your commute faster? For me, if I leave work a little earlier or later I am in a different part of rush hour, and can get home a lot faster. Maybe that would be the case for you too.

I've been testing out the commute. It seems that if I leave at 5pm, I hit rush hour traffic at the first part of my commute, but the 2nd part is smooth sailing. But if I leave at 4:30pm, I'm good until I hit the 2nd leg of my journey and it becomes a gong show. Hopefully it gets better when we move our offices. :)

I joined a gym down the block from work because I thought that i would *totally* go after work. I did not go that often. It's soo annoying to lug extra items around (no car) . It sounds minor-but it's a huge hassle. Also, I hated having to commute back home wearing my sweaty gym clothes (crappy showers at the gym-with no shampoo/body wash and my hair would freeze in the winter if I did shower there)

Now i'm at a gym near my apartment and I come home (around 6)-eat something light, change into gym clothes, watch seinfeld, and then I go walk to the gym a few blocks away. It works out well because it gives me time to chill. If I have class-I go to the gym straight from class-but I keep my stuff in the locker there and they have shower "stuff".

since you seem like you need to chill before working out-I'd probably suggest not joining near work (it might just be a waste-like mine).

How long is your lunch break?Go during lunch? You can split cardio and weight lifting.. lift weights during lunch and do a quick cardio session after work (eg. 20 minutes but intense).

My lunch break is only 30 min, so I wouldn't be able to do it in that short of a time. Plus I sweat really easily so I wouldn't want to change back into my work clothes afterward and wouldn't have time to shower.

just my two cents, but i would leave work at 5pm then go to the gym for an hour (or about that) then head home from there. rush hour would be finished & it would be smooth sailing from start to finished :) hope it works out for you!

I have this same exact problem and commute schedule. I tried getting up 30 minutes earlier (to do the 3-Day shred also!) but it didn't last long. Now I just work hard at motivating myself to run or go to the gym at least 3 days after work…and then "make up" for the lack of exercise on the weekend. It's not sufficient, but it's all I can muster at the moment.

  11. Maybe you could join a gym halfway home? Ha. That commute is brutal, but at least it is only temporary.

I got busy and totally put fitness on the back burner — time to move it up again!

I was having the same struggle when I first started my job because I get up at 5:30 as well and get back home at 6pm. I was finding it hard to find the right time to dedicate to working out. I started working out right after I get home from work. I drive right to my local gym right after I get off the bus so I can stay motivated to go. It seems to work great for me!

Erp. Now you've got me feeling guilty that I haven't even tried to factor in fitness between the new job and the … sleeping. Are you a morning person to begin with? The very idea of (though I know it's supposed to be great for you) getting up early to work out is sort of gross 'cause I hate waking up, generally.

How does moving offices effect your commute?

Moving offices will definitely cut down on my commute. Maybe by as much as 30 or 40%. I'm not sure exactly, but based on what I've seen over the last week, I'd be going the opposite direction of rush hour traffic. At least on my morning commute. Which would be sweet.
