Second Interview

Well today’s phone interview went very well, and they have scheduled me for an in-person interview for Tuesday! :) The organization and the job sound great.

Of course salary range was addressed – she asked what my salary range was. I said around $50-55k, but that I was definitely flexible, and she said that the position is in the mid-$40′s, but that I sounded like I had the right background and experiences, so salary would be negotiable and she didn’t think it would be a problem. They also offer great benefits, a flexible work schedule, and educational opportunities.

The only drawback to the job is that it’s quite the commute for me (about 32 km one way – and I’d have to drive – public transit says I would need 4-5 transfers and 2 hours to get there – no thanks). And in rush hour? Ugg. But then again, if I land a job in downtown Vancouver, the commute would probably be just as long. I miss my hometown, where the commute from the heart of downtown to just about anywhere is less than 15 minutes in rush hour.

Congrats! Sounds like they want you. :) Guess you'll need some awesome music for those car rides if you get the job. A couple of co-workers said they watch videos on their ipods while driving home…bad!

Really!?!! That's ballsy. It's illegal here in BC to use your cell phone or any handheld device while you drive, so I wouldn't be able to watch videos on my iPhone – not that I'd want to anyway! That sounds super dangerous. :)

Congrats! Though 32 km one way is pretty intense! You would have to factor in how much gas will cost you too =( But it sounds like a great job- like the flexible work schedule aspect! Maybe you could negotiate to head into work during non-peak traffic hours?

  3. Good luck on the second interview, it sounds like they are really interested in you.

As others have mentioned, perhaps the flex-time could help with the commute.

Great news, Krystal! Good luck on the interview. I have a long commute (over 40 miles round-trip), but as youngandthrifty mentioned, it REALLY helps if the place has flex time. I get in to work around 7 or 7:30 a.m. and so I get to leave at 3 or 3:30 p.m. Makes a huge difference.

great update, although I caution you.. I would not take a job that you have to commute that much, its not worth it.. I am serious.. I have never understood how people can sit in traffic that long for a stupid job.. move closer to the job if thats what you really want to do.. a) you seem to be taking a pay cut b) and spending more time in transit.. not worth it I say..
sorry to be debbie downer, but something to think about..

Unfortunately, I live quite far away from everything (hence the cheap rent situation). I was fortunate that my previous job was only 15km commute one-way (25-35 min. in rush hour), but whatever new job I take is most likely going to have at least a 30km commute. That's just the trade off. Cheap living situation, but far away from downtown Vancouver.

In 2-3 years, BF and I will move closer into town when we buy our own place … but for now the cheap rent helps out with saving for a down payment, and since BF is in school with no student loans, we're staying where we are for the short term.

Also, I don't think I would be willing to take a pay cut, unless it was for my dream job (which isn't going to happen right now). I know I can find a position that is on par or better with the one I previously had.

I agree with doddler. How much is the commute going to cost you? Fuel, ware and tear, time? You'll end up making a lot less that your 50-55 range.
