Well I went to the gym today, after a few days off. I think I might go ahead and start a membership there for April, now that I know my EI benefits are coming through. It’s only $34.20/month on a month-to-month basis. I especially want to start a membership there because 1) I’m not sure we’re going to be renewing our climbing membership, and 2) BF has made the HUGE decision to go back to school (yay!) in May, so I’m going to have a lot of free time on my hands in the evenings after work. Especially if I haven’t found a job yet!
Although I really do want to renew my climbing membership. I think I’ve found myself a new climbing partner (although to be fair, I don’t really know him that well – he’s a friend of a friend who just moved to Vancouver from my hometown), and it would be really really cool to be able to hit that 5.11 target I’ve set for myself. And really, the drop-in rate is $17/day so it makes sense to get the annual membership for $264.50 (50% off the regular price). If I go 15-16 times/year, it’s already paid for itself. And I really want to go at least 2-3x/week. I’ll need to decide soon though, because the 50% off deal I’ve got going for me will only be available for another month. If necessary I would just take the money out of my Travel Fund I guess.
Anyway, my workout today went well. I ran another 5km and improved my time from 26:32 to 26:06. Not a huge improvement, but at least it’s something. I know I can run faster if I wanted to, but I don’t want to push myself too hard. Especially not on a treadmill. Treadmills used to be the bane of my existence. When I used to run competitively in high school and throughout college, I was getting shin splints like you wouldn’t believe. It was only chip trails for me for years and years. And speaking of trails, now that the weather is getting nicer, I really want to start trail running again. I’ve got the trail running shoes, so it’s just a matter of motivation.

I own a treadmill and I find they can cause weird little injuries if overused (like shin splints you mention). I ran for a 40 minute period last year on a steep incline and messed up my right hip for a while. I never thought that could happen with a treadmill…but it did to me at least. I can't wait to start running outdoors when the weather gets a bit better.
