Nike + iPod March 5, 2010

Posted by gmbmfb in : fitness , trackback

So I just realized that my iPhone comes with the Nike+ built-in receiver. That’s awesome! I’ve always wanted to get the Nike+ iPod kit. So all I would need to do is buy the wireless sensor (Apple is selling it for $19, but I’m sure I can find it cheaper somewhere else). This would be perfect for me to be able to track all of my runs.

Does anyone else use it? Is it worth the money?

I have one and use it sometimes. It's not that I don't use it because I don't like it…it's more that my interest in tracking my runs is usually pretty low. Anyway, it's not perfect and sometimes it can be a little fickle to calibrate, but all-in-all I think it's very good considering it's pretty darn inexpensive. Something like a Garmin Forerunner is much better if you want to get serious about it, but you're also going to pay a whole lot more for that. For the price, I don't think you'll find anything better. Though, it may take a little creativity to get the sensor attached to something like Five Fingers…

My iPod Touch has that too, but I haven't looked into it. I think I will, now that I'm getting serious about working out!

I have used this technology since the day it came out in Canada, and I would never replace it!! I'm on my 3rd sensor in 4 years. Nothing is easier than plugging in your distance and just running. When the voice says you are halfway done – you turn around and run the same way back. No thinking, no mapping out… just you, the road and the voice!! And then to hear Paula Radcliffe or Lance Armstrong congratulate you – AMAZING!!

You can buy a sensor holder at the Running Room or online for approx. $10 and this attaches to the top of your shoe. So easy!!!

LOVE IT!!!

I use it and love it. Once you get it calibrated, you're golden. You get addicted to breaking your own records. Plus, Lance freakin' Armstrong talks to you through it. Awesomesauce.

Maybe I have a weird step or suck at calibrating (i tried it!) but mine was like 15% too high. It was good though — I still used it because at least it logged everything. I finally broke down and got a garmin forerunner 305 with a HRM — but I don’t recommend that until you are definitely serious about your running. I thought $20-$30 was a great price for the nike+

Use the runkeeper app, don't need to buy another sensor (and replace them as they break). They have a free and pro version, but free should be good enough! I think it is great!

My wife and I used this a fair bit when we where in Europe. We used it to keep track of how far we walked each day on vacation. It was very interesting to see the distance that we walked. Most days it was up to 20K of walking up and down cobble stone streets.
We used it with the iPod Nano, the one form about 4 years ago, so the battery barely mad it through the day. I am sure the new Apple products will last allot longer.

Yeah you're right … it'd be pretty difficult I'd bet to attach it to VFFs! The Garmin Forerunner seems pretty awesome, and I have heard that the Nike sensor is hard to calibrate. So we'll see. Even if I use it for a while and decide I want something more, or nothing at all, for under $20 it's worth a shot.

I'm addicted to my nike+. I received it (and a thing to strap the disc to my asics) as a gift a few years ago. I've worn it for almost every run that I've gone in the past year and a half. It's a great way to track your progress and check past run statistics.

I agree that Garmin makes better products, but they're out of my graduate student budget :)

My husband has one. He uses it regularly but he's a regular runner. It's nice to keep track.
