After a week of using my Philosophy creams, it wanted to break up with me. Which was fine, because I wanted to break up with it too. It was a bad relationship all around. Philosophy deceived me into thinking it was such a fabulous catch. The first few days (the honeymoon phase) were amazing. I felt so much love. My skin felt good and radiant. But after about 4 or 5 days, its true colours came out. My skin became irritated, flaky, itchy and super super dry. I wanted to make it work, tried as hard as I could. But it just wasn’t meant to be. Deception! Total bait and switch.
So I went off to Sephora to break up with Philosophy for good, and to find me a new cream that would love me back.
I spoke to a saleswoman who didn’t seem too surprised that Philosophy hates me. She said that she has a sneaking suspicion that people with super dry skin can’t wear that brand – even their “dry sensitive skin” cream … because she got the same symptoms when she tried to use it too. And anytime anyone ever returned Philosophy creams (which is rare), they almost always had the same problems.
She recommended Korres (didn’t like the smell of any of the creams), but suggested that Ole Henriksen might be a better brand for me (felt great on my skin). I then asked about Skyn (remembering that Fabulously Broke had reviewed one of their creams, and they got really good reviews on the Sephora website). The saleswoman said that the Skyn Pure Cloud Cream was absolutely fabulous and THE BEST moisturizer for dry, sensitive skin in their natural products line.
So I broke up with Philosophy, and started a new relationship with Skyn Pure Cloud Cream ($75 US), Skyn Glacial Face Wash ($30 US), and the Skyn Icelandic Relief Eye Pen ($20 US).
First impressions of Skyn?
I feel hesitant in singing praises for Skyn after I was so horribly wrong about Philosophy, but I feel like this relationship is going to work. Oh, and you know what is absolutely amazing? No more oily t-zone! It’s just … gone. That has never happened before for me.
The Pure Cloud Cream feels like heaven. The moment I first put the cream onto my face, I felt instantly hydrated. It felt like I had given my skin a huge drink of moisture. Face felt nice and soft, and way less itchy and tight. Flakes are gone for the most part. I have a tiny patch of ezcema above one of my eyebrows – it’s still a bit bothersome, but way less red, not flaky anymore and has definitely calmed down.
The Glacial Face Wash is to die for. It has the best consistancy and best feel of any face wash I’ve ever tried. Creamy and foamy. They say you only need a dime-sized amount, but I was using half that and it was more than enough. And it didn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry either.
The Icelandic Relief Eye Pen is pretty good. I don’t have dark circles, never have puffiness, and don’t have wrinkles. I use eye creams for preventative care. Not really sure how much I like the pen. Will probably buy the jar the next time around. Providing this brand works for me, that is.
The only bad thing about Skyn so far is that it’s expensive. I just got one cream to use for day/night, instead of separate creams. Although, the eye cream is cheaper than Philosophy as was the face wash – and will last longer. So, when I returned all of the Philosophy products, because I only bought one jar of cream and the face wash & eye cream were cheaper, I got a little refund over what I paid for the Philosophy stuff (< $10). Not bad, but still costly.

Oh and Skyn is definitely more expensive (I cried at the tag) but so worth it not to have a crazy oily t-zone (same here!), softer skin overall, my eczema spots softening up and disappearing, and just feeling better in general
My skin glows in the morning

Isn't trying to find beauty products that work with your skin the worst? I'm glad to hear Sephora is so generous when it comes to their return policy. Most places aren't.
Most of my beauty products are drugstore brands, but they work great on my skin. I've been searching for YEARS for a high SPF facial moisturizer. I might just have to suck it up and look at Sephora.
Jackie: I spent years with drug store brands. Most brands I've tried at least once. But they all lacked something. I never found one that had it all going for it. Hoping I found The One with Skyn.
Oh and yeah Sephora's return policy is amazing. I'm impressed. J was totally shocked that I could buy and return used if it didn't work for me. I used to avoid Sephora at all costs, but now I'm converted.
Did you need a receipt to return it to Sephora, or did you just bring in the unused portions?
Anonymous: I had my receipt, but when I was reading the return policy on the back of the receipt, you're allowed to return without a receipt. You get a store credit (I think) and you get a refund that is equal to what the current selling price is for the product.
I assume it's within reason – like you can't return something that's been half used. I know there are a few people that read this blog that currently or have in the past worked at Sephora. So maybe they can chime in!
What makes the hunt for the right cosmetics difficult for me, is I've been trying to switch to cosmetics with all natural ingredients.. but having sensitive skin, I've reacted to all of them.. and most of the time it's all the essential oils/smells that are added…
i had the korres yogurt sampler pack. it was blah. i wouldn't buy their stuff again. i used clinique for years and it just stopped working for me, and because i work outside in harsh conditions all day, every day, i needed something with good SPF and for the winter it needed to be really moisturizing. i went with the ole henriksen skin protector (i think thats what its called) and it is FANTASTIC! a bit thick for summer i think but my face is SO happy right now, its ridiculous. the SPF works way better than anything else i've tried and my skin has cleared up even. i highly recommend! its expensive, but so worth it.
Yay for new regimens! I love Cloud Cream but my all time fave is Nurture Me by Ole Henriksen. It's got the same orange creamsicle smell as Cloud Cream but I find its texture to be a bit smoother. Plus it's cheaper. Oh and Bliss' Energizing moisturizer is similar in texture and smell to the last two.
Yay for no T-Zone! it's funny, people with T-zones are typically afraid of anything hydrating and always want oil-free everything but sometimes when you feed oily or combo skin moisture, it stops over producing oil because you're not stripping your skin to get rid of the oil in the first place.
Le Meow: Yes, my big plan is to calm and de-stress my skin using Skyn, and then once everything is good, switch over to Nurture Me by Ole Henriksen. I LOVED the smell of that cream when I was testing it out. I smelled exactly like an orange creamcicle and just wanted to eat my own face. It was awesome.
Oh yay! I'm glad you're going to switch to Nurture me. Not that Skyn is bad, it's just that finally somebody likes what I like. You will love it. I have usually used creams then after a while they give me pimples or some sort of other reactions but not this one! Although now I use a seperate matifying moisturizer on my T zone and also have introduced a glycolic acid toner to clean up the dead, rough skin.
I am definitely considering trying the destress Skyn product now though.
Mutual feeling. I loved it for a month or two, then all the sudden I was heartbroken and left alone with a tub of ice cream ;)
I now just use Nivea at night, the blue tub, it is extremely rich and nurturing but might leave your skin too oily, it works for me though and I only use it once a day.

Yo frugal blogger try sorbolene cream:) it's like $5/Gallon and works really well. Personally I just use sunscreen. The less I disrupt the natural balance of my skin the better
