Lately I have been inspired to pick up running again. When I was last home, my dad got to talking about when he used to run marathons – not competitively, just for his own personal satisfaction. He ran in a few city marathons before he had his stroke, and now he can’t really run anymore. He just walks a lot.
And a few days ago, @karlwoll from OutdoorVancouver.ca mentioned that he was training to run a marathon, and recommended this book to me: The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer. I’ll be buying it from Amazon the next time I have enough Swagbucks saved up.
I was talking with BF about running a marathon – which he fully supports. And he said that he’d like to train with me, so that we could run it together. It would be a great bonding experience and something really cool that we could accomplish together.
I used to be decent distance runner. I ran cross-country from Grade 3-12, placing in the top 10 for most races. I also ran track and field from Grade 4-11, and of course ran steady throughout my collegiate years. I’m not built like a distance runner, I’m built more like a muscular sprinter – but that distance training helped my endurance. And for years and years there were very few field hockey player that I met who were faster than me.
But those days are far behind me. I haven’t played a proper game of hockey in almost 2 years, and I don’t even recall the last time I went running. Not in 2010, that’s for sure. I don’t really enjoy running long distance, but I’ve always wanted to run a marathon. And I feel like I could run it for my dad, since he enjoyed running so much and isn’t physically capable of doing it anymore. I think it would make him really happy, and I know he’d love someone to talk to about running, since both my mom and my sister don’t run at all.
So, potentially I could start training for a marathon in the near future. I still don’t know if I have it in me right now at this point in my life (it’s such a huge time commitment), but it seems like I don’t have any real excuses not to. I’d love to run the Royal Victoria Marathon in the fall of 2011.

I think you should totally do it! I set a goal to run a marathon by age 30, and I'm 31 now and I've run 5(my 6th is in May) total. It's addictive. I do suggest you run a half marathon first to see if you actually like running longer distances.
Do it! I've run 1 marathon and 2 half marathons. Vir is right – they do become addictive! There is just something about crossing that finish line and getting your medal…After I'm done having this baby I fully intend to do more halfs and full marathons. I'm already signed up for my come-back race (a duathlon) in August.
I ran the Walt Disney World marathon so my medal is shaped like Mickey Mouse. :) There's also a Rock 'n Roll Marathon in Las Vegas (inaugural one was last December) that looks like so much fun! You get to run down the strip!
My wife has run two half marathons (woo hoo!). She wants to run a marathon but with two little kiddos, it is hard to put in the hours it takes to be successful. A half marathon is a stellar way to get a start. (as Vir and Cynthia said). Good luck!
I'm almost sure I'll do one eventually, but I'm taking a very very slow route and don't plan to do it until this fall at the earliest.
The one I want to run most is in April — Big Sur. BEAUTIFUL course.
The time commitment isn't as huge as one might think, considering you are already working out so much — you'd just have to give up Sat mornings for long runs. And you'd have less time (probably) for some of your strength. But still, it is some time, and most of all, determination.
So I'm waiting until I'm ready!
Good luck!
If you have even the slightest interest in doing it, DO IT. I'm not athletic at all, and I was able to finish one. I also used The Non-Runners Marathon Trainer, and it's fantastic. I used it to train for two half and one full. For what it's worth, the BMO Vancouver Marathon is awesome. My friends and I searched far and wide to decide which marathon we would do together and settled on it. We ran it together last year and were all so happy with our choice. I also did it with my husband, and that made it even better.
Awesome! It's a great decision. I'm not a distance runner at all but similarly just had a desire to run a marathon. The book breaks things out nice and evenly over 4 months of training prior to the race, and they encourage you to run with a partner so its good that J is joining.
Look forward to the updates, good luck!
Oh, and thanks for the link love!
I stick with half marathons (just on my own – I don't bother entering races). Every 2 or 3 weeks I'll run a 1/2 marathon distance run. My usual run is more like 8 or sometimes 10 miles, so the 13 miles isn't too much of a stretch. I really have no desire to do marathons.
