Day 21: 30 Day Shred February 16, 2010
Posted by gmbmfb in : fitness , trackbackI’m getting close to the end of my 30 (non-consecutive) day challenge. I can’t believe how much stronger my arms are now. I guess those traveling push-ups work!
I’ve also stopped doing the Wii Fit yoga after my Shred workout. I just don’t find yoga to be worth it. 30 minutes of yoga burns minimal calories compared to something high impact. And while I understand the benefits of stretching and I know that it makes me more balanced and my muscles stronger, I find it oh so boring.
So once I’m done this 30 Day Shred, I’m going to move on to Jillian’s No More Trouble Zones DVD. I also really want to take some sort of cardio class. Maybe kick boxing or spinning. I’d love to get into top shape before field hockey tryouts at the end of summer. I can’t wait to start playing again!

It isn't always about stronger muscles. There are many strong men out there that do nothing but work out and pump iron, but can't bend over and touch their toes because they didn't see the benefit in stretching and found it boring.
Stretching wakes up your muscles and cools them down after the workout. You will get further benefit from your "real workouts" that you value, when you do stretching, whether it be yoga or something else. If you really want to be fit and healthy, you should have a stretching routine.
It is great to be strong, but it won't do you any good if you can't actually move do to overly tight and overly burdened muscles.
Anonymous: I stretch and cool down after every workout. I definitely know the benefits of what stretching does to my body.
That being said, I was doing yoga on top of stretching and I was just commenting on how I don't think it's worth it for me to spend the time doing yoga when I could spend that time doing something more high impact for more of a workout.
I think Wii Fit yoga is Iyengar style yoga? Not positive. I personally don't get much out of Iyengar; it's too slow for me.
If you are still interested in yoga I would recommend attending an Ashtanga class at a studio (to make sure you are holding each of the poses correctly). Ashtanga follows the same set of poses each time, so you can practice at home without having to decide what to do next once you know the series.
And it is a butt-kicking workout!
I have felt the same way about my pilates DVD. I definitely enjoy it, but it is very low priority.
I liked the Nameste yoga on FitTV (also on DVD that my sister stole from me!). Short 20 minute routines, relatively fast paced.
I think I will continue to use my 30 day shred even after 30 days are over.
Trust me, you won't find bikram's hot yoga boring. Give it two classes and then see what you think. Hot Yoga will kick Jillian Michael's DVDs' asses!
I think any kind of steady-state cardio is a waste of time and yoga is just way to slow for me. Why would you spend 40 minutes – an hour doing something when you can do a higher intensity work out in 20 minutes of less? Of course, I stretch before and after work outs too.
Of course, I still try fit in a least a session of steady-state every now and then to give my body some rest but I find it soo boring and always dread it.
Her no more trouble zones is an excellent dvd. it will really build your muscles and tone your body. i use that and the fat burning dvd alternatively. very difficult and some times it is a real trial to push myself but i love that after burn feeling i get the next day.
