Out of curiosity – why do you think Dale Begg-Smith is a jerk?
Well, there are a few reasons why I think he’s being a jerk:
Besides the fact that he left Canada to compete for Australia (that’s not a huge deal, it happens a lot in sport), and also besides the fact that he runs a shady internet company that spreads malware … he is completely devoid of emotion, a total sore loser, deliberately snubs the media (Canadian media in particular), and tries to hide the fact that he’s Canadian.
This picture says it all. He had that stupid look on his face the entire time, and just stood there stone cold and emotionless. Even the bronze medalist is happy. And even if you’re upset that you lost the gold, at least be gracious and congratulate the other guys on the podium.

Totally agree with you. How can you be so emotionless at the Olympics! The smile and cheers from the other athletes says it all, and his emotionless stare also does. He's a strange guy for sure.
Given that his own coach said he doesn't feel emotion like other people or something he's definitely an odd one. Having said that I'm already so done with all the various sob-story "inspiring" profiles around the Canadians (can't we just support them for being kickass athletes?) so it's kinda nice to have a bona-fide villain on view.
How about the fact he skipped out on the press conference for his team and his coach said he would be arriving at the games some time in the next 24 hours.
Two hours later he gives interviews only to his country's media.
Questionable.
Sounds like he's bit of a meatball if you ask me, especially after reading the post and comments.
He's unbelievable…I heard that his coach is going around saying that there was no way he should have been second, that the judges screwed up. Nope, they didn't, Alex was better, plain and simple.
He's a very weird man, kind of glad he's not competing for Canada.

he had that exact same look on his face when he WON the gold last time. couldn't be bothered to smile. when he was awarded the circuit leader bib he yawned. the guy's a jerk.
I just finished watching the medal ceremony for personal confimation with this dude and he certainly seems like he's really into himself. It's like he could care less if he was there. The bronze medalist showed emotion and was pleased with his result.
Maybe he has some sort of social problem? I can't imagine someone winning gold and looking so removed.
I myself don't have any opinion about Dale either way, but was just curious about something. Would people's opinion change of him if he was exactly the same in every way … but representing Canada instead? Be honest …
Anonymous: If a Canadian athlete acted in the way that he did, I'd be quite embarrassed for our country. I can't stand sore losers.
He totally looks like a sore loser! Notice how he didn't even bother to take off his goggles THE WHOLE TIME? To show his eyes??
(hmm maybe he was balling his eyes out underneath those goggles, we don't know)
He's weird. He looked like stone on the podium.
I heard he's like a multimillionaire running his internet business– I didn't know it was something skeevy like spreading malware! =(
He is a bona fide dork. No doubt about it.
I don't usually disagree with you, but here i have to say, you got it wrong.
I really love Dale Begg Smith and i have only just heard about him.
Yes, he may have an 'shady' internet company, but what about that athlete that opened a brothel to earn money to compete? (can't remember whether it was an aussie or english guy or summer or winter games).
He stopped competing for Canada as he didn't like how they trained, (he wasn't given time to work as well as train), yet he still lives there.
Perhaps, he was upset with himself that he "lost" and didn't want to show that, hence the eye cover?
Maybe he is one who doesn't show emotion?
We don't know. And honestly, i like the way he acts.
Yes, it is the Olympics, yes, it is a big deal, but maybe just maybe he knows its not the be all and end all?
Maybe (and i know that i am probably going out there with this), but maybe he was thinking about the man who passed away the day before?
Either way, we will never know.
Honestly, though, while he did do amazing, (as did the Canadian) i'm glad there were low celebration from him. Its not like he is curing cancer or saving lives.
I have to also add that he wanted to work, so he was ABLE to continue training as his family couldn't afford him to continue.
And he started working at 13.
here-here!
I'm going to have to disagree a little too. Maybe he is a tool. I don't know. But nothing I've seen makes me think he definitely is. Maybe he's just stoic in general, especially if the other poster is correct about him acting the same way when he won gold. I tend to be that way myself and a lot of people think I'm not emotional or excited about whatever is going on. That's not it at all. I've just never been one to show my emotions much, especially in front of a lot of people. And that definitely doesn't make me a jerk.
Red & Anonymous:
On an international stage like that, you are absolutely judged on how you carry yourself. It's one thing not to show emotions, but not even to take your goggles off and shake hands with the other competitors? He literally just stood there, didn't move an inch, didn't acknowledge the other two beside him. Sure, maybe he was upset about losing, but by sulking the way that he did, isn't that the definition of being a sore loser?
Maybe he's a perfectly nice guy, but there's just no excuse for his behaviour.
did you see after Alex won and he went to hug the guy ( not sure if it was dale or not) but the guy totally walked away from him and Alex just patted him on the back. I felt bad for him. He was trying to be nice.
Yeah? Well that sore loser just gave half his paycheck to orphans. Orphans with diseases!
He may be emotionally challenged, but why be so judgemental. Wanting to stab the guy in the face? Call him a Jerk? Just soak up our gold and get over it already.
Go Alex B!
Cherry: I was trying to be funny. I don't actually want to stab him in the face, nor do I think he (or anybody for that matter) deserves to be stabbed in the face.
I actually thought your "stab in the face" comment was hilarious, but maybe that's because I'm American. ;o)
Either way, keep posting about the Olympics. I appreciate your first-hand POV!
Maybe he has some form of autism and social anxiety, etc. There are many factors that can make someone act that way. My own daughter would be EXTREMELY uncomfortable if someone went to hug her (her arms would be down at her sides, etc). There are people who suffer from these types of things who are amazingly smart and talented, but come across as very weird and cold to others. This may be the case here?

I think he is great. He's one of the most real athletes because he doesn't need the sponsors to carry him. The other athletes are completely worried about their image and branding to keep their sponsors. I think that you have a problem with him because he is snubbing Canada and it was the Canadian coaches who weren't willing to work with him. I'm an American and I was cheering for him. I think he's incredible that he can go to the Olympics and win (at least once) while creating his own multi-million dollar business.
ndchic: It's not worrying about your image for sponsors, it's being a good sport and being a gracious silver medalist. No matter how shy you are, how pissed you are that you didn't win gold … he has been an international athlete long enough to know how to act. Shake hands with the other medalists. Acknowledge the crowd. DO ANYTHING except just stand completely still, looking sour, looking bored, looking like you want to be anywhere but there.
I didn't actually know that he was born Canadian until the competition started. I knew of him, but not of his details. So that's not the reason. My perception of him is based solely on what I saw and how he acted.
And from what I understand, it wasn't the Canadian coaches who weren't willing to work with him, it was because his business pursuits were clashing with his team's training schedule. The Canadian coaches told him that he needed to dedicate more time toward training. So he went where he could be with a team who would work around his schedule (a smaller ski country & smaller ski team).
Interesting article on Begg-Smith.
