Almost tax time!

Tonight I’m going for a dinner/movie date with a friend. I’m really looking forward to it. We’re either going to see Up in the Air or Leap Year. I’d watch either. I still really want to see Avatar (I know, I know, I should have seen it already – I said I was going to!). I was waiting to see it with J, but he’s been so busy lately and all my friends have already seen it. Sigh. I should just buy the IMAX tickets. Then he’d be forced to go. :)

Other than that, things financially are going as planned. I’m (im)patiently waiting for all of my forms to get mailed to me, so I can start on my taxes. I’m thinking of doing my own taxes this year. It’s a bit complicated because of my side business. Last year I went to H&R Block because I thought it would be cheaper than my old accountant. But it ended up costing $280! WTF! Good thing my refund was quite large. They charge per slip of paper, which isn’t really fair because most of what I had was pretty easy. Just entering a dumb number into a program. So I’ll attempt to do it myself this year, and if I find it too difficult, I’ll just go back to my old accountant who charges $100.

Try UFile.ca (Free to try, you dont have to pay til you want to file!) It's super easy to use – all web-based so there is no program compatibility to worry about!

Ive been doing my own taxes for 4 years with it – even got the ex-bf to use it when he was a consultant!

I love how the blog now plays nice with Chrome – thanks Krystal!

Saw Up In The Air before it was released nation wide and REALLY liked it. Checked out Avatar in 3D and considering my dislike of 'fantasy' movies it was okay.

Used H&R Block the first year I moved to the US because I had to file all kinds of tax returns in both countries. It also cost me way too much money (almost $300) and that was right around the time they were hit with the fines because they messed up their own accounting :)

What I did when I was self employed was go to an accountant (he was cheap, just like $70!) for 2 years. Then I took over myself, but followed what he did to the letter, inputting the numbers in QuickTax… I love that program! I can do 4 returns for about $40, not bad.

Couldn't you claim the accountant's fee as a tax deductible expense since you are sort-of self-employed thru your side business…?

Marquelle: yes I do claim as a business expense but still. I need to find a cheaper way…

I agree with April Fire about UFile. I got to file for free last year because I was a student/made less than the required annual salary, but the program is really helpful and user-friendly. They even told me about all the things I could carry forward (that I didn't know I could carry forward) for use when I make more money and pay more taxes. You can even tweak it and change numbers to see your refund as you go.

Nothing is easier than QuickTax…I was a QT user for years, then 2 years ago I used UFile and it was horrible. QuickTax is more money but worth the extra $10.

    Hi Krystal,

Geoff here from the QuickTax team. Everyone’s advice in the comments is good: tax software is a great way to prepare and file your return. (No points for guessing which brand I prefer.)

A couple of people here in the office commented on your post, because we see a lot of people in similar situations. If you are interested, I’ll send you a copy of QuickTax if you will tell your readers about your tax prep experience – what you liked, what you didn’t like, whether you got all your questions answered, if it was easy to use, how it managed your personal and business taxes, whether it was a better or worse experience than the tax store route, etc.

My contact info is here: http://www.intuit.ca/en/intuit/media_index.jsp

    Cheers,
    Geoff
