Dear Rogers Wireless: together again!

So, as you know I’ve had some cell phone drama over the past week. And for the past few days I’ve been talking with someone from “The Office of the President of Rogers Wireless.”

This all started with this post. I was complaining how I was removed from my current (killer) rate plan, and told I could not get the iPhone or a rate plan at new customer pricing. Which made me angry. @RogersMary read my post, and forwarded my concern onto the appropriate people at Rogers.

After a few e-mails, I finally got a phone call. I explained my problem, and he offered me a solution. I wasn’t too thrilled, citing Telus had a better plan & my contract will be expiring shortly. So he offered me an even better rate plan (even better than I have right now!).

I ended up getting the 32gb iPhone for $299. I was going to get the 16gb, but I already have 16gb+ of music. I am selling my 32 GB iTouch to my sister for $175 and I have about $50 sitting in my Paypal account. So I should only have to pay $75 + tax out of my pocket. I will be able to squeeze that out of my January budget.

My old rate plan was $18/month. And my new base rate plan is $17.50. Plus I don’t have to pay that stupid System Access Fee. The guy I spoke to said they got rid of the SAF but in turn, raised the prices of their plans by $5/month. So my new plan is a really good price.

$17.50 Rate Plan
200 anytime minutes
6pm unlimited evenings/weekends
2500 min. call forwarding
Call waiting

$40 Value Pack
500 mb data (will be enough for me b/c when at work or at home I am connected by wifi)
Unlimited texting
Call display
Visual voicemail

Total = $57.50 + tax

I’m very pleased. It probably isn’t the best iPhone plan available out there, but this is even better than the $50 promotional plan that I wanted (which was offered on the website – and didn’t include 6pm n/w, voicemail or call display). Previous to this new rate plan I was paying about $40-45/month. What I’ll be paying now is not much more. I’m still not sure if the $40 Value Pack is right for me. But I’ll try it out for a couple of months, and may drop down to something cheaper – because both unlimited texting & call display are not necessary features for me. And that would drop my price plan down to $50.50 + tax.

What did I learn from all of this? Be persistent. If you think you’re being treated unfairly, speak up and you’ll get what you want. No company likes it when you bash them on the internet. Especially when you’re a PF blogger!

I am now a satisfied Rogers customer once again.

Congratulations! That sounds like a pretty good plan – I would love to get the iPhone but there is no way I can justify the AT&T network and rates down here.

  2. RainyDaySaver says:

That is a great deal, persistence paid off! Like Brian said, I can't spend what they want here in the States for an iPhone or any smartphone data plan, plus talk time.

This is an awesome deal! I don't pay much less than this, and I don't even have a data plan!

  4. Grocery Alerts Canada says:

What happens when you go over your limit for data?

Grocery: If you go over, it's $0.03 per MB. But for the first 2 months, I won't be charged any overages so I can make sure that 500 MB is enough for me. Which I'm sure it will be, as I won't be downloading songs or streaming videos, etc. I can do all that heavy internet usage while using wifi.

  7. Erica says:

wow thats not bad, That's pretty much what I'm paying for a blackberry however I have more minutes and long distance. I cant justify paying the $299 for a phone thou. lol

Hi! Glad to hear that worked out to your satisfaction :-)

The @RogersHelps online communications team is not meant to replace Care – that's always the first place to start – but we try to help out where we can.

Thanks for sharing your experience… nice to have you back!

    Take care,

Congrats – glad to see they found something satisfactory for you!

that's a pretty good deal. they really tried to woo you back. i actually always find Fido & Rogers to be better than Telus and Bell though in terms of customer service. (But I'm not sure if that's just an Ontario thing as I've heard different stories depending on where you are in Canada)

Jennifer: I bought the Touch for $175 when my sister bought her computer. It's in mint condition and $150 is a pretty good deal for a 32gb Touch!

I heard that for the iPhone, it doesn't "package" the data like blackberries do, and iPhones risk going past the 500MB data moreso than Blackberries.
It's good that you get the first two months free, to "test the waters" re: data overage.

  14. krystalatwork says:

youngandthrifty: I will be on wifi most of the time so I am sure I will be fine. But yeah the 2 months to test it out is a nice bonus just in case!

Wow that's an awesome deal you got. Thank you for posting it. I'm just wondering, what are the cheaper value packs? You mentioned that if you get rid of call display and unlimited texting, it drops the price down to $50.50 + tax. Is it because you'll have a different value pack? Thanks in advance.

    To RogersMary:

You seem like a really pleasant person. I don't happen to have a cell phone … but would you still consider being my friend?

  17. krystalatwork says:

Jaycee: Well because my base plan is $17.50, I would just add on data for $25 and visual voicemail for $8 = $50.50.

I could even drop down to regular voicemail for $7, so that my plan would be $49.50!

  18. Jackie says:

In America the only way you can get an Iphone right now is through AT&T. The cheapest rate plan you can get through them is over $75/mo. You got a great deal! I really need to call my phone company and see if there is a way to drop my base minute plan down. Mine is 350 minutes but I'm lucky if I use 20 minutes a month.
