Jumping on the 30 Day Shred bandwagon

So I picked up Jillian Michaels: 30 Day Shred (Amazon associate link) while I was in Calgary (used a gift card). I was always curious about it, but didn’t want to fork over the $15 to buy it when I have 3 perfectly good Wii workout games sitting at home. But the gift card, combined with the entire PF blogosphere trying it out, I decided to give it a go.

Now a little background about my fitness level (for those who are new to this blog). I wouldn’t consider myself to be ‘fit’ right now. I mean, right now I could probably run a 10km without stopping (< 60 min.), and I could do a 2 day hike. I can do a lot, fitness-wise ... but compared to the top physical condition I've ever been in? Not even close. I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but then again, I don't think I could ever get there again unless I decided to get back into competitive sports - which I won't be doing because I'm too old and don't have the dedication I used to have (who has 6-8 hours per day to workout!?).

Anyway, I want to first say that it was harder than I thought it would be. This morning I did Level 1 using 5 lb. weights. But after it was all over, I was still left wanting more. Tonight I’ll probably do another workout on my Wii, and then tomorrow morning I’ll try Level 1 again, then assess whether I want to keep doing Level 1 with heavier weights, or if I should just move onto Level 2.

This DVD is also definitely harder than any of the Wii fitness games I have. It was the only one that really got my heart pumping. And I really like how she doesn’t give you rest time in between exercises. I’m going to keep doing the 30 Day Shred every morning and incorporate it into my fitness routine. I’d still like to do 30-60 min. per day of other exercise though. But I do like how it’s only 20 min. long, so I have no excuse not to do at least the Shred every single day, if I don’t have time for anything else.

I’m curious what her other fitness DVDs are like. Does anyone else have anything else she’s done? Opinions?

Hi! I started doing the Shred at the beginning of January. I am using 5 pound weights and sometimes 8's (with the leg stuff). I find it challenging but also leaving me wanting more…so I usually head out for a jog right after and that usually does me in! :)

Dude. You are totally fit. TOTALLY.

Especially compared to the rest of the population of lardees such as myself!

Jeebus, just the warm-up on that DVD felt like a workout to me! …However it has been months since I actively exercised…

Anyway, I just wanted to remind you that you're in amazing shape! Just because you're not super-athlete anymore doesn't mean you're not fit!

Glad to hear you're enjoying it though. I still need to get off my butt and get through that session!

LOVE the Shred. I used it as a little exercise variation when I was training for my marathon. Sometimes I would find it wasn't quite enough for me either, so I would either do two levels back-to-back or hop on the bike afterward. Many of the exercises are easy enough to modify to make more difficult too.

I did this a couple times and my legs dislike it, a lot. My legs were always sore the next day.

However, I'm definitely not in shape, but have a decent fitness level. I ran a half-marathon in September (<1:50). This still kills me though.

I have about a month until my half-marathon training routine starts for a May run, so maybe I'll do this until then.

I agree with the above! If you're not fit, I don't want to know what you would define my fitness level as!

I am beginning to think the Shred is more for people like me who actually have 20 pounds to lose off their frame. I think if you can already do a 10km run, you're probably already at a pretty decent weight and I'm not sure if the Shred would do much for you. It will be interesting to see how the results of everyone compare at the end.

I love Jillian's shred. It was surprisingly difficult but I could have def done another go. It was very challenging. Your arms will ache like hell tomorrow…lol

I do think your definition of fit is a little insane — but it is good to push yourself.

It was a lot harder than I expected too. Somehow "workout DVD" just seemed like it was for wimps. turns out I'm a wimp! And the DVD was tough! Not good enough for cardio for me, but the strength stuff was great!

First off let me say that I need to get back in shape, I used to teach and was always on my feet and I found 2-3 hours to exercise every day. Now I'm a desk jockey and struggle to get to the gym everyday. But I am really kickign my butt to work out everyday, and have been back on track the past few weeks.
Unable to get to the gym on Saturday I decided to do Shred through On Demand on my cable box.
I found a few of the moves hard, but my house doesn't really let me jump (my neighbors would hate me and stuff was falling of my shelves) so I had to modify the jumping stuff.
Overall I can see how it is hard, but I was SOOOOO bored and it left me feeling like I hadn't done enough.
I would rather go to a 60 minute class at the gym or work out on my own, I'm pretty good at kicking my own butt now that I'm back on track and actually going to the gym.

You seems very fit to me! I have to say, though, The Shred kicks my butt.
