So I called Rogers yesterday to just inquire about the cost of an iPhone & price plans for myself. Just to satisfy my curiosity, because I’ve always wanted one (and I could sell my iTouch to pay for the iPhone). I’m nearing the end of my contract, so I thought they’d be able to give me a good deal if I was willing to extend my contract.
Well, not only did they give me the crappiest deal in the world, but through their meddling in their system, they removed me from my rate plan (I found out when I logged into the Rogers website today). A quick call into customer care, and they said they could put everything back the way it was, but because I was on a discounted plan, I’d have to provide my employee number, etc. of the place I was working when I was put on the plan a few years ago. I obviously didn’t have that information anymore, so now I’m out of luck. I even called back again and spoke to a manager. Then I went to two Rogers Wireless stores with the same answer.
Which I suppose is fair enough. I don’t deserve the discounted plan anymore because I no longer work there, but in order to get all of the add-ons that I once had (for free), I now have to sign up for a 3-year plan. Or pay for them. Which I am not willing to do for a company that isn’t willing to give me the same prices on phones/plans that they would give to a new customer. Even though I would be willing to sign up for another contract.
So what does this all mean? I will be leaving Rogers once my contract is up. I was a completely satisfied customer for almost 5 years, and now I’m looking to Telus, or any other company that will provide me with the plan that I want at a price that I’m willing to pay.

Perfect example of "Leave well alone" :-)
Jessica: I know! :(
I haven't heard of any of those companies. What country do you live in?
I'm curious, you should do a post of what apps you have on your iTouch. I just got an iTouch for x-mas and I am wondering what good productivity, financial and fun apps people enjoy using.
I've been looking into grocery apps that compare the best prices in the area, but haven't found anything worth purchasing yet.
check out Bell too – I worked for them for a few years and didn't have nearly the problems I had when i was with telus
i've heard nothing but bad stuff about telus actually. i've been with fido (roger's, i know…) for probably 8 years and they really are awesome. i had an iphone then my boss suggested i give my iphone to a co-worker and he paid for the new iphone…fido extended my contract (even though it wasn't up for another year) then gave me the iphone for 50% off…great deal! then…i proceeded to drop it and break the glass which costs $250 CAD to replace through apple but that's another story…anyway…good luck with all the research ('cause I know you'll research them all!) :)
I had a similar situation with stupid rogers also last year. that is why i got out and am NOT returning. they give no special consideration for old customes! i find that is super stange. anyway, i am now with fido which is cheap and suits my needs perfectly. good luck but your search should be easy.
People on Fido – how do you find the reception? I've heard some ppl say that it's not very good, especially in more rural areas – even though it's owned by Rogers?
Koodo is pretty good for a low cost company.
And this is also the reason why I save all the numbers of anything I ever dealt with for employee #s and discount #s.:)

Oh and full disclosure, Koodo is with Telus
But it's a good brand so far. No muss, no fuss.. I like them. They're like the PC financial of the cellphone world :)

There's the new player in town, Wind Mobile to consider as well!
I've heard bad things about all the companies, so I think you'll have the same problems with whoever you pick.
Fido IS owned by Rogers, but its a discount brand (same as Koodo & Solo), and also operates on different mobile technology. If your reception is ok then they might be a good choice.
How hard did you negotiate with Rogers, though? I have a spectacular plan for only a 1 year contract at a time. If you call them and ask for Customer Retention then you'll get the good deals. Front of the line folk (even supervisors!) can't do anything for you, no matter how long you've been with the company.
i've been with fido for about six years now and have never had a problem. good reception and good rates. i actually called them a couple of months ago to have them stop charging me the annoying monthly system access fee and with some persistence, i won :) i figured it was worth the fight since they offer NEW customers plans without that $7 fee.
i am totally camp fido.
UGH.
I HATE ROGERS!!!
We have 2 cell phones,
One with Virgin – another horrible company.
And one with Bell – who are great!
I have one with Bell. I have had problems with bell ripping me off in the past, not with cell phones though.
So far, call phone wise, Bell has been ok, except for when they "accidentally" gave me a credit, and then took it back.
I have heard good and bad things about all these companies, so I'm starting to think it really doesnt matter which one you choose.
I had Fido and left because of customer service issues. Went to Bell, who gave me my free BlackBerry.
I love Bell's service, though the "customer" service could use a little work. They're very 9-5 and hard to get ahold of.
Reception was definitely a big reason for switching. I used to lose calls on Fido all over Vancouver (even in my own home) and had a horrible time in the Okanagan. My Bell phone works like a charm at my rural place, I have unlimited internet (unlike my boss who is with Rogers and got a message the other day saying he'd used up all his bandwidth for the month a couple of days before his statement date) and I have free calling between me and 5 numbers anywhere in Canada.
I've only heard bad things about Rogers.
I can't believe how terribly companies are starting to treat their customers, it is almost as if they want to lead them to their competition or something. Rogers has dropped the ball, and now they have no insurance that you will stick with them after 5 years. Pretty poor way for them to run a business, if you ask me! Good luck finding a better provider…

Hi – This is Mary with Rogers. I came across your blog and would like to look into this.
A colleague will send you an email for additional information.
I apologize for the inconvenience this caused and we'll try to help if we can.
Thanks!
Mary
Krystal,
A couple of weeks ago, I logged onto my Rogers account only to find that my contract end date with them had been extended without my authorization. I was obviously beyond pissed-off.
My first conversation with a sales rep lead me nowhere. The rep essentially told me that I "must have authorized it" because it was on my account. She also said there was no way she could change it. Well, I asked to speak to a manager and when that manager proved to be a dickweed, I asked to speak to another. Eventually, I just told them that there was no way I would have authorized a contract extension for any reason since I have known I will be leaving the country prior to the new contract end date (a lie, but given that I was the one being scammed in that relationship, I didn't feel it was unethical).
Needless to say, they changed the contract back. If this is your first time running into problems with Rogers Wireless, you may want to try harnessing your negotiating power and see what they can do. It's worth a try if you're otherwise happy with Rogers's service.
As for me, Rogers has messed with me too many times. I will be happily leaving Rogers when my contract (or rather, prison sentence) ends.
Hmm Wind Mobile is only up so far in Calgary and Toronto. And they don't have the iPhone, They only have blackberries so far… they don't tie you to contracts, but you have to pay upfront for the entire phone (so none of this discounted-phone-business).
